JUST RELEASED: #BeyondMAGA, our new study of 12,000+ Trump voters, reveals Trump built a coalition, not a cult. Only 38% of his 77 million voters say being 'MAGA' is important to them. We identified 4 distinct types of Trump voters—each with different motivations and worldviews. Meet the MAGA Hardliners, Anti-Woke Conservatives, Mainline Republicans, and Reluctant Right: BeyondMAGA.us

More In Common surveyed nearly 19,000 Americans across six surveys and broke Trump's coalition into four distinct groups. Only 29% are "MAGA Hardliners" who see Trump as a near-religious champion. The other 71% have very different motivations.

Less than a third of Trump's 2024 voters are actual MAGA true believers. The rest? They don't wear the red hat. They don't think they're in a battle between good and evil. They just think nobody on the other side is listening to them.

Trump presents himself as a norm-breaker who delights in poking his finger in his critics’ eyes: In #BeyondMAGA, we found than three-quarters of MAGA Hardliners and more than half of Anti-Woke Conservatives believe that “President Trump should make the left pay for its mistakes and lies.” This sense of transgression fuels a gleeful energy that runs through much of Trump’s public communication. As Gina, a 50-year-old white, MAGA Hardliner who lives in Florida, told us, Trump is “a gigantic orange flashing middle finger, and I love it.” moreincommon.substack.com/p/beyond-maga-…

Trump supporters are sticking with him. And it’s clear that faith in Trump’s leadership is not driven by his adherence to a coherent political ideology. If ideological consistency can’t explain the enduring loyalty of Trump’s base, what does? In #BeyondMAGA, we find that President Trump’s political power depends on his ability to play different roles for different parts of his coalition. Read about the four roles Trump plays from @shawkinshere & @dyudkin, originally published in @TheAtlantic: moreincommon.substack.com/p/beyond-maga-…

🇺🇸Raport Beyond MAGA oferuje jak dotąd najdokładniejszy obraz wyborców Trumpa. Wbrew pozorom nie jest to ruch wyłącznie „biednych i gniewnych”, lecz szeroka koalicja ludzi, którzy czują się kulturowo obcy we własnym kraju i postrzegają Trumpa jako jedyną barierę ochronną - pisze Paweł Farbisz klubjagiellonski.pl/2026/03/24/kim…

While perceptions of Trump as a leader are shared across his coalition, the reasons supporters give for voting for him in 2024 vary across groups: MAGA Hardliners are motivated by a strong personal loyalty, with seven in ten (63 percent) saying they are simply “strong supporters of Donald Trump.” Anti-Woke Conservatives, by contrast, are more policy-driven: a plurality (41 percent) say they had reservations about Trump but agreed with his policies. Mainline Republicans are more divided, with a third (33 percent) citing policy agreement despite misgivings, and nearly as many (32 percent) expressing strong personal support. The Reluctant Right is more likely than any other cohort to say they voted for Trump because he was “less bad” than the alternative (39 percent). moreincommon.substack.com/p/beyond-maga-…

How do Trump voters feel about the war in Iran? @shawkinshere joined @cspanwj's @TaylorPopielarz to discuss how he expects that Trump's base, especially MAGA Hardliners and Mainline Republicans, will continue to trust the President's judgment about how to defeat America's enemies and help our country. When asked by @DavidMDruckerwhether President Trump's coalition is breaking on Iran, @shawkinshere cites #BeyondMAGA saying: "Among American voters, the critics [of the war] seem to be coming from the groups that are already critical of Trump...so it's continuity, not change — as opposed ot breaking open a new fissure."

If you think Joe Kent is a principled dissenter of Trump and the Iran war, think again, @DavidMDrucker says bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

"There is perhaps no label as misunderstood as Trump voter." Our Executive Director, @jason_mangone, joined @TaraRHenley on the Lean Out podcast to unpack our latest research, "Beyond MAGA: A Profile of the Trump Coalition" and dig into the coalition that voted for President Trump in 2024. A leading Canadian podcaster, Tara reminds us that "it's crucial that Canadians understand what is going on with the Trump coalition and not to paint all of our neighbors with the same brush." To understand the coalition Donald Trump assembled, we must see him through the eyes of the 77 million Americans who voted for him: what he represents to them, the role he plays in their lives, and why so many view him as the answer to this period of perceived American decline. In #BeyondMAGA, we revealed that the source of President Trump’s power is his ability to play different roles for supporters across his coalition. Americans do not experience connection and freedom as opposites. Instead, both “Community” and “Freedom” may be something core to the American identity—values that resonate across groups even in polarized times. moreincommon.substack.com/p/what-america…

Representing a fifth of President Trump’s coalition, the Reluctant Right are Trump’s least ideological and least loyal voters. They’re also the most concerned about his immigration policy. Our six Reluctant Right Trump voters are Independents and Republicans alike, hailing from Connecticut to New Mexico. Read what they had to say about immigration: substack.com/home/post/p-18…
