@poppymoppet I was visiting a friend at Virgin Manor Studios in 1973, a chap walked in and asked if I could spare a cigarette - sure. Few minutes later, same chap playing a guitar in the garden. Who that? I asked my friend. Mike Oldfield preparing for first live perf of Tubular Bells at QEH!

The Curse Of Lono, by Hunter S. Thompson (the emperor of gonzo journalism) and illustrated by Ralph Steadman, born #OTD in 1936. These two collaborated over many years, defining the expression ‘gonzo journalism’. (First UK edition in Picador, large format, Pan Books 1983).

Baptised #OTD 1727, Thomas Gainsborough, RA. Died 1788. Hanging in stately homes around England, most famous as a portrait painter, also a printmaker and a great landscape artist, swift confident brushstrokes followed his perceptive eye. 2003 – a London & New York exhibition.

Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) amongst high society with zero filter! “Come on. Come on Dover. Come on. Come on Dover. Come on. Come on Dover ... move your bloomin' arse!!!”. Audrey Hepburn at her most iconic in George Cukor’s dazzling 1964 musical comedy My Fair Lady ... an 8x Oscar winner, including Best Picture. Costume designer Cecil Beaton created 1,500 costumes for this movie, with the exception of the pearl white gown Audrey Hepburn wears to the Embassy Ball, an original Edwardian specimen Beaton found in an antique shop. Audrey Hepburn later admitted she would never have accepted the role of Eliza Doolittle if she had known that producer Jack L. Warner intended to have nearly all of her singing dubbed. After making this movie, Hepburn resolved not to appear in another movie musical unless she could do the singing on her own.

Born #OTD 1918 (d 2009), stage, film & tv actor Joseph Wiseman. As the evil Dr No in the film of the same name – first of the movies based on Ian Fleming’s spy thrillers – Wiseman will be remembered as being the first ‘Bond villain’. But he wasn’t green. First Pan paperback 1960.
