In view of the recent tragic incident of a young veterinarian named Dr Sameeksha Reddy being killed by a hippopotamus in Shimoga Lion And Tiger Safari in Karnataka, World Animal Protection has written to the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry Of Environment And Forests and Central Zoo Authority to do an immediate and urgent due diligence review of all safety protocols surrounding the management of large and potentially lethal animals in zoos and captive facilities. World Animal Protection has also drawn attention to the risks faced riders and mahouts from possible instances of aggression of captive elephants at Amer Fort in Jaipur.
