While I believe traditional grading hinders this approach, I think Monte is spot on with most of what he said! At its core, grading is supposed to be about feedback to improve learning. On the whole, the educational system in America does a terrible job delivering on this idea.
Monte Syrie@MonteSyrie

The “what” (form) of grading matters little in the end. Traditional. Standards-Based. Gradeless. The “why” and “how” (purpose and practice) matter much. All (forms) can and should be used to the same end: Reporting and supporting learning (forward). #Project180

New school year starts today. Nerves, excitement, and the same focus - Tier I instruction. Big thanks to @letsquitteachin for the video that helped launch our focus for the year. Nothing “new”, just deeper and stronger into our Tier I Focus. Looking forward to a great year!

Always one of my favorite days of the year. Today we celebrate about 120 Grade 9 Learners with our annual B’s or Better Pancake Breakfast. Pure joy, happiness, and gratitude. @ctrisenetwork

Math MCAS Recharge! Gave our Grade 10 Learners some space and time to relax, rest, and recharge after Day 1 of Math MCAS today. Board games, lawn games, freeze pops, and some quiet space. They are ready for their final day of testing tomorrow!

As we head into April Break, a friendly reminder that many of our learners don’t share our excitement. They don’t have great travel plans. They are losing their structure, routine, and adults who care about them. Many of our learners might need to hear that we will miss them!

Great day at the @ctrisenetwork Annual Convening. My head is still spinning with all the great learning and reflection that took place. I can’t wait to figure out how to put some of it in action at BHS. Love that @peterlorinser10 is wearing the Burncoat swag in the team photo!

That’s a wrap on ELA MCAS. We continue to do our best to shift testing culture at Burncoat High School. From positive words of encouragement, to a grand entrance, and even @drrmonarrez attending our Pre-MCAS Pep Rally and taking some shots for our learners! We believe in all!

What a great afternoon celebrating over 125 Grade 9 Learners who earned B’s or Better 2nd Quarter. Stickers, Certificates, A Movie, and Arts and Crafts. These are always some of my favorite days. Such joy and excitement. A great way to end the week! @ctrisenetwork

@letsquitteachin This goes beyond just assessment. Unfortunately, there are far too many educators who view all of education as summative. Changing mindsets is critical, and so challenging. But we move forward, for the kids!

A fellow educator provided this memorable quote yesterday at our virtual @ctrisenetwork session. Which was great, as always! “You shouldn’t be in education if you can’t pivot.” So true. And, it definitely needs to be heard.
