@SciEdSpecialist This is so true! As a special educator, I notice that promoting and creating opportunities for teachers and students to step into equity is often uniquely challenging and highly rewarding. Thank you for sharing this thought, @SciEdSpecialist. #GSUEdLead

According to the Wallace Fndn Report, effective principals understand that equity is a practice. They promote equity by educating their teachers on the realities of their marginalized students and by creating key opportunities for those students to meet their needs. #GSUEdLead

@MsBenefield This is a challenge for me as a school leader. Often the work conflicts with building strong work relationships. Nevertheless, this one area where I am committed to growing. #GSUEdLead

Key takeaways from Grissom et al. (2021) work: effective principals excel in instruction, interpersonal relationships, and trust-building. Reflecting on this, I'm committed to growing as a leader and honing these skills for impactful school improvement. #GSUEdLead

According to Grissom et al. (2021, p 62) "...principals in higher per schools follow up more consistently on classroom observations to provide more specific, actionable feedback..." This practice is tough, but consistent feedback benefits all (particularly students). #GSUEdLead

@Krathbun_GSU I too am interested in the metrics that correlate principal effectiveness to decreased absenteeism. This leads me to pay closer attention to the principals I know and their actions as I am on my leadership journey. Great thought. #GSUEdLead

A study showed that effective principals can decrease the level of student absenteeism. I wonder what the mechism is that causes that effect.... #GSUEdLead

@CoachAllen1975 The indirect impact on student achievement leads me to consider both the intentional and direct initiatives of my own leadership (though I'm not a principal) and how I can leverage them to increase student achievement. Thanks for highlighting this @CoachAllen1975. #GSUEdLead

In How Principals Affect Students & Schools, the principal's impact is 1) mostly indirect towards student achievement, 2) impacts on factors that create conditions for students to learn, and 3) the timing of effects makes it hard to specifically track accurately. #GSUEdLead

Interestingly the harshness of principals is associated with both fewer behavior disruptions to instruction AND higher rates of students charged with misdemeanors as young adults... It matters how we discipline our students. #GSUEdLead #HowPrincipalsAffectStudentsAndSchools

@MsBenefield I thought this was interesting and I appreciate you highlighting an important finding from our Grissom et. al. It makes me reflect on how I might yield my experience as I consider my current role and my next steps... #GSUEdLeader #BeTheChange

Did you know? Effective principals can increase student learning by +2.9 months in math & +2.7 months in reading! Wow! You can learn more about the crucial role of school leadership in Grissom et al. (2021). #GSUEdLead

@coachingharrell I am curious about the same concerns. In fact, I find them alarming as I consider if these trends continue, especially as we discover the powerful influence of a principal in a school community.

Research from Grissom, Egalite, and Lindsay (2021) illustrates the changes and stagnation of the characteristics of principals. Section three raises the question, why has the experience level changed (decreased) while diversity & education remain fixed? #GSUEdLead

Interestingly, #GSUEdLead, despite significant racial change among public school students, there has been little change in the diversity make-up of public school principals since 1988, per the #WallaceFoundation. What solutions might address this inequity? #RepresentationMatters

@AaronAvera Thanks for sharing @AaronAvera. This is one area I find challenging due to the nature of education where mistakes are costly in the lives of students. I would be interested in learning how other educational leaders have built such a culture in their schools.

It is important to build cultures where it is okay to make mistakes. This allows us to learn. If we build a culture where mistakes are frowned upon, it will boost anxiety, causing overreactions and impacting our decision-making. #GSUEdLead

“Organizational ghost” is a term used for actions made by a leader that continue to make an impact even after they are gone. New leaders must be historically aware of the past and how OGs can continue to shape an organization both positively and negatively. 🐐👻 #GSUEdLead

This video challenges my own attitudes of "naïve realism" and reminds me of the ancient proverb that celebrates "wisdom in a multitude of counselors". It prompts me to reach out to my team and supports for optimal courses of action. #GSUEdLead youtube.com/shorts/1n0W7e3…

@EbonyBetts99 I agree! I thought this video was super-insightful for my current leadership path. I had a principal who would often say "Accountability is messy business, but it keeps us all clean." More and more I find having others to share this work with is invaluable! #GSUEdLead

youtu.be/o3IZY-qxZo4?si… I'm thinking about the importance of having a thought & accountability partner in all aspects of life. Leadership is no different. A right-hand partner brings a unique knowledge & perspective to helping a leader make more informed decisions. #GSUEdLead

@BethLockwood78 This is one area where I am looking for resources to grow. I praise the highs, but I would like to do more for my team. Additionally, I notice the lows and use protocols to address them, but I want to make sure my team feels supported... #LookingForResourses

Leaders must be careful not to forget that there are ebbs and flows in performance. Set realistic expectations that celebrate highs and support the lows. It is important to normalize steady growth in performance. #GSUEdLead
