⛴️A new kind of warship changed naval history. #OTD in 1862 the CSS Virginia steamed into Hampton Roads and destroyed the USS Cumberland and USS Congress. Wooden warships suddenly look very old. Iron had arrived. #CivilWar #TodayInHistory

On this day in 1861, the newly established Confederate States of America adopts the Stars & Bars as a national flag. It's an unpopular choice; many in the South denounce the design as a "detestable parody" of the Yankee banner. It will be replaced in 1863.

Today in 1776, Continental troops fortify Dorchester Heights overlooking Boston with captured guns dragged over 300 miles from Fort Ticonderoga. The British have no choice but to evacuate the city two weeks later.

William Henry Harrison was born before the Declaration of Independence on February 9, 1773, in Virginia. He was born a British subject under King George III, making him the last U.S. president born under British rule. He was even born before the Boston Tea Party. By the time he became president in 1841, the nation had already fought a revolution, written a Constitution, and expanded west. His presidency is remembered for lasting just 32 days, the shortest in U.S. history. Unfortunately for William, his inauguration speech, lasting almost 2 hours, caught him a horrible cold that led to pneumonia, which led to his death. While we can’t really remember him for anything truly presidential, his grandson Benjamin Harrison would later serve a full term in the White House.

This Thoughtful Thursday is a fun twist. I’m a big music lover. My playlist spans Big Band/Jazz, Motown, Classic Rock, Grunge, Metal, and so much more. The other day I started to think, what music would the founding fathers like? Who do you think would be the country fan, the metal head, the rocker, the jazz lover, etc?

@history_dame Made a papier-mâché alien head in MS art class and was thinking how cool it was looking. Couldn’t see a thing out the eye holes. Had to ditch it after 15 minutes.

What’s a memorable Halloween costume you remember from childhood? For me, I was the kid that LOVED doing original costumes. So mine were often homemade. One year I decided to go a giant die (dice). I took a big ol’ cardboard box, painted it and that jazz. But I misjudged on the location of my arm holes—they were too high. By the end of the night my arms, which couldn’t bend, were so numb from lack of circulation. Epic.
