My book The Black Ridge is out in paperback on June 9th. If your dreams dwell in the shadows (of all kinds) cast by sharp mountains, I wrote it for you. Between now and then, here’s a daily thread of some pictures taken whilst making it. 1/14: Carbost, Cuillin, squall. #Skye

Bought this, by @MrSimonIngram, a couple of years ago, but have only settled to read it today. Really fab description. Enlightening history. And an ascent of Ben Nevis in opposite conditions to those in which I was admiring it over the weekend from the Glen Etive Munros (pic 2).

@katejarmstrong ‘Ascent’ would be a stretch… Snow was chest deep as I recall! But thank you, and glad you have found something enjoyable in the book, Kate. I think my favourite bit writing it was researching dogged Ben Nevis forecaster Clement Wragge in ‘Weather’. Excellent character. 🙏

I've just been informed that Robin Campbell, perhaps the most knowledgeable figure on Scottish Mountaineering history (and so much more) has passed away. What a loss. Personally, I'll miss his kindness, wicked sense of humour and positive encouragement. An actual legend.

I've been writing for 18 years this year, to relatively little effect. The upside is that a moment like this is truly special. Up at 5am to slog for 2 yrs, & then your book appears in The Times. Sometimes life is magical. Whatever you do, just keep at it. thetimes.co.uk/article/the-re…

@NikMcCluskey Nice!! Smashing sound actually— just leave the last note off the riff and let the penultimate one ring .. and it will be like I play it !

@JanCarson7280 I wrote two books about the British mountains - Between the Sunset and the Sea and the Black Ridge - and I certainly didn’t write them because I had the luxury of excess free time or money.

A bedazzling, colours-of-Christmas sunset. The bitter cold wind set my teeth chattering and my gloved fingers numb, but it was worth it. View from Red Point (Wester Ross) across the Inner Sound and Isle of Raasay to the saw-toothed swagger of the Cuillin, Isle of Skye.
