We’re very fortunate to have a local economy with fundamental strength right now. Our administration is focused on broadening access to prosperity and tackling rising expenses. We’ve had some recent successes with housing and transportation, but there’s more work ahead.

I join those mourning today’s loss of Rev. James Lawson. He represented the best of us and trained activists to withstand the worst of our nature. And thus changed the course of Nashville's history when we became the first city in the South to desegregate its downtown.

The Reverend James Lawson was a moral giant of the 20th and 21st centuries, a man who changed Nashville and the nation with his unshakeable commitment to justice, freedom, nonviolence, and love. These communities and moments are priceless. Thank you to @MrStephens3 and everyone who welcomed him and this group of students four years ago and helped them come together and thrive through one of the most trying times I can imagine… in middle school. You’re loved too.

He’s the kind of principal who stands on the arms of a chair in a suit, stretching to rescue an untethered balloon, and he has a story to share with every family about a way their kid is stretching as a student and a member of the community.
