Anybody good at colorizing wanna take a crack at this? I especially want the flags in color (the small one next to France is Poland). This is from Vladivostok in 1918

I've always been a huge fan of James Garfield, especially since I grew up 40 minutes from his birthplace, but man Death by Lightning has made me love him even more. What a loss our nation suffered with his death.

@history_under Does the problem actually stem from the US being a 2 party system? Would the extremes be easier to ignore/reject if they weren’t forced to insert themselves into the only 2 relevant parties?

I do my best to steer clear of politics, but this has some crossover with history and is worth a watch. I’ve said before that this country has two extreme elements that are going to take it over the edge if both sides don’t rein them in. There’s a hard pushback from the right going on against the extremist elements on their side. I’m hoping to see an equal pushback from liberal leaning people towards the extremism on their side as well (Bill Maher being one of the rare exceptions).

If you do believe in that framing, you will only matter to the “we” as long as you’re useful to the “we”. Don’t be a conversation ender, be a conversation starter.

Our tribalism has been amplified by algorithms that slowly and imperceptibly give us a perverted view of reality, and fuel an addiction to validation. YOU are not part of the “we”, and “they” are not part of the “them”.

As a history educator, I try not to be preachy in public settings. However, I’ve taken time to articulate this observation of present society while being mindful of history. This might require a short 🧵.
