Just finished watching the MHA More episode. Rant incoming.
I like it well enough. It doubled the length of what was the original chapter and gave time to best boy Lemillion. I enjoyed the longer car ride with Bakugo and what he's going through in looking for a sidekick. Seeing some of the older designs were nice. Others were not (Mirko, Ryukyu, what happened to you darlings?)
However, the whole thing kinda left me melancholic. I felt bad for these guys. Almost 0 heroes got together, as far as we know (but it's the end, so we ought to know!). Even Kamijiro got sniped at the last moment (to where the audience just assumes they're lying), Mina and Kirishima did not get in the back seat together, and the Deku/Ochacko ending is still as vague and afraid as it was in the manga.
Now, I know I am a top level mha smut man who have put these characters in debauched scenarios galore, but all I'm saying is these folks ought to be more tender. There should be more romance and love between these guys after 8 years. The older adults needed to get married. Why are Kuro and Kinoko the only ones putting in work! Black Clover ended this week as well, and they spoiled us with 6 marriages, kids, and a potential threesome with the protagonist. Undead Unluck tied the knot at the end in a lovely fashion. Demon Slayer ended with proof that Tanjiro scored. Chainsawman, the manga where Denji never scored, had a more tender and heartfelt ending with Denji, Power and Asa.
I feel like I'd be bummed as fuck being a hero in MHA. These guys have no lives outside of work, no romantic partners. Shoto is happy cause he's getting a chopstick hobby outside of work. The whole point of 431 was Deku and Uraraka don't have to be so self-sacrificing and can be in a relationship, but that feeling doesn't stick. These guys are just so entrenched in their roles as heroes. They're good boys, good citizens. Their face is like a mask I can't get under.
I watched the DragonBall Superhero movie, and what I loved about that movie was that you can feel the aura of community in the main cast. Everyone feels like an old time friend. Shenron treats Bulma like his favorite repeat customer. Piccolo is regarded by everyone as Uncle Piccolo without ever being named as such. It reads as something written by a man with depth and richness in his life that he got outside of his work (RIP Toriyama). You can see the same in One Piece, especially with child characters. Can you tell that Oda is trying to spend more time with his irl children? That's good stuff.
MHA started out as Horikoshi's last desperate gamble to make a hit shonen series. You can feel his fear and grit in Deku working and breaking his body in order to get a little further past chapter 20 and chapter 50, the places where Shonen Jump Mangas usually get axed. And once it got popular, you could feel the jubilation, excitement, worries and eventual struggles up to the war arc. Then, somewhere around the second movie, it felt like he wasn't as social as he might've been before. Characters felt like they fossilized. They stopped talking like normal people. They were speaking in themes and plot to force depth into the series. Things were less dictated by how characters felt and their emotions driving act than by how the plot needed to be written, and the characters providing reasons for it as plausible deniability. The scene with Deku and Ochacko on the rooftop in season 7 is a key indicator. Horikoshi wrote them putting down their feelings and focusing on Shigaraki and Toga because doing anything else would spiral off the manga elsewhere when he wanted it finished soon. By the end of the series they were stuck like that.
1A feels like they're perpetually at work, a work that gives them no partner, no kids, not even a car, except for Bakugo cause he rules, and their friendships are put at arm's length, you know, like you do with co-workers. No one's even drunk at this party. These guys have no lives, and they'll continue to not have them, even if they have cool jobs as superheroes. It's kinda depressing. This is not something you wanna be in your 20s. Lads, if you read this far, go out, socialize with real people, find a third space, be a community man. Maybe this is my Americanite frontal cortex not being able to process social etiquette of Japanese characters, but you wanna go beyond this. Have some passion in your life. Don't be like Deku and wait 8 years to get the girl. Go hard. Reach out to people. The price of love is inconvenience.
