The US would be happy to deal with *an* Islamic Republic, as long as it's militarily degraded and politically pliant. Israel wants to shatter any potentially unified successor state, regardless of its political character. Hence the targeted assassinations of dissident Iranians.

I don't think it's a case of Israel leading the war on Iran, so much as Israel having far more extensive war aims than the US.
