@ComicDaveSmith Remember if Massie ever runs against a competitive democrat, they would be calling him a NAZI, pedophile, fascist, or worse, just like Trump. This is why he lost, R's are sick of trying to compromise with people who are just going to attack you in the most underhanded way anyway

@MetamateDaz You know the last time gas was $5 a dollar was probably worth a lot more than today. $5 today was probably equal to $3 then, so it was way more painful then over today…

Last time gas was over $5, a decent house wasn’t $450k and groceries weren’t $300 a week. Too many struggles at once

@OrevaZSN I doubt there are many if any with a billion dollars just laying around. I would bet most have a billion in assets employing tens of thousands though and building many things we need and use every day.

I don't think people fully understand how much 1 billion is. If your salary was $100k with no tax, it would take you 10 years to become a millionaire, but 10,000 years to reach a billion. It is unethical for one person to be hoarding this much wealth while others cannot eat.

@aakashgupta If the argument is she is such an impulsive spender that this makes good sense, then chances are she'll end up borrowing against the $1000/week payout no different than if she had spent the million. This is dumb financial planning, with alittle thought she could have done better

The spreadsheet math on this is brutal. She left roughly $54 million on the table. Yet she probably just made the best financial decision of her life. $1M in an S&P 500 index fund at age 20 compounds to approximately $58M in inflation-adjusted terms by age 80. The historical real return is about 7% annually over 97 years of data. Her annuity pays $52,000 a year. Over 60 years that totals $3.1M. The gap is 18x. Every finance account in these replies will tell you she's wrong. The compounding math is clear. Take the lump sum, put it in VOO, don't touch it for 60 years. The Certified Financial Planner Board says roughly a third of lottery winners declare bankruptcy within five years. Illinois court records show 28% of winners who won $50K or more went bankrupt in the same window. The average winner spends 60% of their winnings on family and friends in the first two years. She's 20. Peak impulsivity, minimal financial literacy, and every person she's ever met just found out she has a million dollars in her checking account. The $1M doesn't go into a Vanguard account. It goes into the most socially pressured spending environment a human being can occupy. $1,000 a week is a permanent $52K salary, tax-free in Canada, that arrives whether she makes good decisions or catastrophic ones. Can't be drained by a partner. Can't be lost to a scam. Can't be "invested" in a cousin's restaurant. Shows up every Friday for the rest of her life. The spreadsheet says lump sum by 18x. The data on what actually happens to people who receive $1M at 20 says she just bought the most expensive insurance policy in lottery history, and it was worth every dollar she gave up.
DividendBoomer@BoomerDivvies

An 20-year-old Canadian girl won $1M (tax free in Canada) in the lottery and chose $1,000/week instead of the lump sum. Is this wise or the worst financial decision of her life? What are you doing when this happens to you??

Dear people who say "just move somewhere cheaper": Where? Rural areas have no jobs. Small cities have no opportunities. Big cities have no affordable housing. We didn't all fail to find the secret affordable cit. The secret affordable city doesn't exist. Yours truly, Everyone under 40

@Joe__Bassey Why is he wasting time with photo-ops? Just get those machines moving and do the job. He really doesn't need to sell this to the world if his people are happy with the work; this just smells of an ego trip.

Instead of patronizing so-called expatriate contractors from Europe and Asia as most corrupt African politicians do, Captain Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 bought 776 construction machines and handed them over to African contractors to begin road construction across four regions in the country.

Eight European countries claimed neutrality in WWII. All eight helped Nazi Germany attack the USSR. Spain sent 45,000 troops. Sweden supplied iron ore and let Wehrmacht use its railways. Finland starved 400,000 children in Leningrad. Now they tear down Soviet monuments and rewrite the history. Here's what they're hiding: 🇪🇸 Spain (Franco) 🔸 Officially neutral 🔸 De facto aligned with Germany 👉 Blue Division (División Azul) - ~45,000 volunteers - Fought on the Eastern Front - Involved in the siege of Leningrad which was an operation to genocide all the residents of the city via hunger. As a result 1.5 million civilian died including 400k kids.

@joeymeats2 @WallStreetApes There really is no issue other than someone wanting something for free. Trucks all over park at rest areas for free and idle or shut down and deal with the lack of internet, AC and heat but for those willing to pay for it, some truck stops will provide the service for a fee.

Free parking for truckers at truck stops is disappearing in America A company called Truck Parking Club launched an app that lets property owners of truck stops, warehouses and lots monetize their parking spots for truckers via reservations Truckers must pay hourly, daily, weekly or even monthly for a spot to sleep or rest The Co-founder and CEO is a man named Evan Shelley. He worked in real estate doing commercial deals and land flips before shifting to trucking parking People like this are awful. Monetizing something our essential workers literally need to sleep at that’s always been free. This lot has been free for 50 years and now it’s paid

@joeymeats2 @WallStreetApes That's not the issue, it's the cost of idling a truck 24/7/365 to provide all that AC, heat, electricity, etc... It's cheaper to pay $20 and shut the truck down living off the umbilical than it is to idle (not to mention pollution).

@SethAbramson The alternative was a job that would bid at 300 million, with an ending cost of a billion that would probaby take 20 years to complete. Because you know kickbacks, union rules, congressional oversight, etc... In comparison, this is cheap and quick.

This paint job—if you can call it that—is costing you $7 million, America, because Trump gave a no-bid contract to a pal This would have been Exhibit A of the sort of shit DOGE was actually *supposed* to be looking for when it was instead cutting lifesaving scientific research

@GavinNewsom First off, lets look at the North East of the US where it's 40% Republican and they haven't had representation in years. Second, most of the new districts are much more based on community VS being long drawn out borders just to reach some urban center.

The United States has the largest prison population on earth. Not per capita. Total. More people in cages than China. More than Russia. More than every "authoritarian" state it condemns in its annual human rights reports. 1.8 million people. Disproportionately Black. Disproportionately poor. Disproportionately from the zip codes with the worst schools, the fewest jobs, the most abandoned infrastructure. This is presented as a "criminal justice system." It functions as a labor system. Prison labor, paid between 13 cents and $1.15 an hour in most states, produces goods for McDonald's, Walmart, Victoria's Secret, Whole Foods, and the United States military. The 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, contains an exception clause: "Except as punishment for crime." That exception has never been closed. It has been expanded. The plantation did not disappear. It received a different name and a legal foundation.
