Deep in the Hill Country of Texas, I came across what appears to be an ancient test cobble.
A test cobble is basically a naturally rounded piece of chert that an ancient flint knapper struck once or just a few times to see if the material was worth working. By knocking off a small flake, they could tell whether the stone would break cleanly and produce sharp, usable edges. If it didn’t flake the way they wanted, it was simply left behind with only a couple of visible flake scars. Pieces like this are subtle but meaningful, they represent a small, practical decision made thousands of years ago before committing time and effort to shaping the stone into a tool.
