Those of us in education need to make it our job to understand the body of scientific evidence around effective reading instruction without any other agenda than to do what is best for kids. We can't phone this one in.

This quote does not mean that everything that is to be known about reading is known. It simply points to the fact that via scientific evidence we know today a number of strategies and methodologies that are effective and some that are not as effective.

And future generations of students and teachers will be better for it. We need to continue to expose reading practices, companies and programs that promote proven ineffective reading instructional practices and that leave large groups of children behind!

This is exactly what has happened when it comes to teaching reading and the use of balance literacy which in spite of all the evidence against it remains firmly lodged in the hearts and minds of its followers.

If U have a disproportionate # of stdnts being referred to tier 2 or sp ed, it is probable that the problem resides in the Tier 1 type of reading instruction they received. Gen Ed teachers need evidence based tools & training. We can’t intervene our way out of a tier 1 problem
