So, of course after IAR state testing this child decided to work on WMP words. I was covering a class for an absent teacher @smorrisey I never get to see these things occur in real time b/c I only have my intervention time! But it was truly amazing!

I really like the Core Knowledge 5th grade unit on Poetry. It provides me and my Ss the structure we all need. Here is a side by side of an apology type poem. One is a sincere apology, while the other is not. I especially like the insincere one.

Today we will edit 3 times for different purposes . 1. capitalization 2. punctuation 3. spelling Breaking up the processes has helped students stay focused on the single revision/edit tasks. Ss final drafts are stronger and better organized. 📸draft 1, 2 @SoRclassroom

First we used shared writing to practice each of these revision tasks so that students had context for what this looks like. Then they partnered up and took turns analyzing each other’s paragraphs with the goal of increasing detail/elaboration, clarity, and fluency.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Writing is the hardest content for me to teach and differentiate for student needs. Narrowing the focus of revisions and edits has helped me better support student writing. Peer revision also gives me time to work 1:1 or in small groups.

Students who have a strong model are better able to plan writing pieces. This graphic organizer is from the same student whose analyzed model I posted yesterday. The model, her content knowledge + familiarity w/ painted essay structure make planning successful. @SoRclassroom

I also use the models as fluency reads. The more students read and hear the model, the better! They are able to refer back to it when writing independently to ID what component(s) they may be missing in their own essays.

One of the components of @ELeducation that I love most is that Ss are always given a model to analyze. It has changed the way I approach teaching writing. We are to the point in the year where Ss are able to analyze first and share out second. 📸 student work @SoRclassroom

The benefits of this practice: ⭐️gets the students up and moving ⭐️ALL Ss are speaking and listening ⭐️Combining it with a text adds the fluency component. ⭐️This strategy can be used with any content and takes as little or as much time as needed. @SoRclassroom

Another oracy/fluency practice is called a ‘Mix and Mingle’ (M+M). Here’s how I implement: 1️⃣ID goal of the talk task 2️⃣Ss M+M until I say, “Freeze” 3️⃣Ss stand back:back with closest peer 4️⃣I say, “go” 5️⃣they turn, read for fluency, ID gist. Ss finish, turn back:back 🔁 if needed
