This is what it sounds like to talk out of both sides of your mouth: “I am the government, and I give you ‘choice’—but only on my terms.” I will take your tax dollars—money meant for public schools that serve all children—and funnel it into private institutions, that can pick and choose who they accept, and the vendors pockets. I will tell you this is about “parental rights,” but I won’t tell you that many of these private schools aren’t required to follow state special education services. I will say I support small government, but I will micromanage public schools with endless regulations, funding cuts, and state-mandated curriculum changes, while letting private schools take public money with little to no accountability. I will tell you that competition makes education better, but I won’t tell you that when public schools lose funding to private schools, they’re left with fewer resources, larger class sizes, and fewer services for the students who need them most. I will promise you “school choice,” but if you live in a rural area where no private schools exist, or if your child has special needs that private schools won’t accommodate, your “choice” is to stay in a defunded, struggling public school. Parents want school choice. Texans want school choice. What are public schools only advocates afraid of? That parents will not choose public schools? They should be working to make their school a school patents choose.

Today I signed executive orders to protect women and girls in sports and to make it clear that Indiana will not go along with the gender ideology that created this problem in the first place. I was joined by Elle Patterson, a former NCAA Division I women’s volleyball player who lost her scholarship to a biological male. These executive orders will ensure no other girl or woman in Indiana will endure what she experienced. Thank you also to Rep. Michelle Davis and Sen. Stacey Donato, legislators who have been leaders on this issue, for joining me today.
