The government can say what they want about inflation and hard times and standards and whatever. But when 3/4 of people in a profession aren’t certain it’s a good job, you’ve got to admit you’ve undermined their goodwill and need to start making genuine moves to win it back.

@MrsBezoari We’ve booked a holiday park in the Netherlands plus ferry from Dover to Dunkirk - look at the Landal GreenParks website. Half the price of similar in UK. End of August was much cheaper as lots of their schools have gone back by then (staggered school holidays).

@HeroicMrT UPS point… Many UPS teachers already contribute ‘extra’ - but unlike leaders still teach full timetable. Some jobs get quicker with experience but others, like marking, will always be time consuming so little capacity for taking on more. Lose UPS? Retention issues will worsen.

Are all UPS teachers actually contributing enough? Does the current pay system actually reflect teachers receiving pay on merit like most other sectors? How much money is being wasted on the private sector (cover/CPD/programmes) Is it the system that’s broke rather than funding

Debating with a genuinely intelligent friend last night who posed the following questions regarding education: Is it time that different subject teachers were paid based on demand? (Eg maths) Are SLT taking up too much of the budget on their own salary? (1/2)

Carly has been using her allotment to feed people struggling with the cost of living. Last night someone broke in and salted the land to stop her growing. Her go fund me: gofundme.com/f/a-meal-on-me…

@BarbaraBleiman @SaysMiss I’ve been fascinated that often developing readers find longer, more complex words easier if they have the conversational vocabulary - it’s easier to read ‘catastrophe’ than a word like ‘though’ as there are fewer words it can be mistaken for and the consonants do the work.

@SaysMiss Phonic knowledge is clearly important but it isn't the whole story. Word recognition is what we ALL do as fluent readers. We read unfamiliar words we can't sound out. Synecdoche, anyone? Mischievous? Colonel? I could read & understand them before being able to pronounce them.

I've started writing my next book – a novel for primary age children. Of course, I'm thinking hard about language difficulty, but am I restricting it to only words that a 5-8 year old knows, or can read? NO! Children can manage, & learn loads from, unfamiliar vocabulary imo!

@BarbaraBleiman This is so sad. Both for reading and writing. Surely alongside learning phonics, children can read and write FOR PLEASURE? My eldest (now KS1 and a very confident reader) read the books she had had read to her as a toddler. This is actively being discouraged??

Who believes this, apart from Ofsted? Tell a 4 year old he mustn’t write a secret message to Grandpa because he hasn’t learned how to represent the sounds with ‘success’. Never mind that Grandpa can read it & he’s so excited to have written something that can be understood! 1/

@bennewmark Newspaper journalist before. Nasty profession (at least where I worked) but far less intense work and much shorter days apart from when there were overnights/ travel. Work also ‘stayed with you’ less as stories came and went.

The most informed barometers for how hard teaching is are those who've done teaching and had another career. I don't know of a person like this who doesn't say teaching is an incredibly demanding role.

Both heartbreaking and outrageous that the new David Attenborough series is a sequence of beautiful things, with Attenborough basically saying "But you'll probably never see this, as the rivers are full of shit. And your kids DEFINITELY won't." Britain is literally dying.

How about a bit more deep concern about a catastrophic crisis in teacher recruitment, as well as retention, an inspection system that is grotesquely flawed and chronic problems arising from drastic under-funding. Get your priorities right & stop this populist showboating.
Gillian Keegan@GillianKeegan

I am deeply concerned about reports of inappropriate RSHE lessons. Our urgent review will look at how the subject should be taught, protecting children and reassuring parents. I have also written to schools to remind them of their duty to show parents materials used in lessons.
