The conversations surrounding label partnerships with artists is appalling. Record labels have been the driving force behind the artistes you people consider the goats. Let’s not diminish their influence in artistes careers because of award schemes.

@Kofi_ohZmaHn There’s no better analytics in today’s music industry to reflect listener behavior other than streaming since the days brick and mortar distribution are far gone. And per the numbers of the project we both have an idea how that social experiment is going to go.

I agree with you! But I think our best bet would be on music tech folks. A proliferation of startups like Dubset and the kind of partnership it has with SoundCloud is the easiest and best way to help DJs. Either through a licensing regime that’s fair for all parties or enough disruption to change the traditional notions of IP (as AI is doing) through lawyers. The only practical way for IP lawyers to help is to heavily litigate and push the frontiers of the doctrine of fair use in the major music markets. This is a very uphill task considering the current standards and rules for determining fair use in various jurisdictions. For eg. i doubt that DJ mixes will survive the “transformative use” and “effect of use on potential market” factors under the fair use analysis of US copyright law. It’s even more difficult under Ghana’s copyright law because the fair use/dealing exceptions are very limited. The most realistic and “wahala-free” approach would be through legislation. Something like a compulsory licensing scheme for DJ mixes similar to how mechanical licenses work.
