PODCAST | The sacrifice and death of Father Maximilian Kolbe At the end of July 1941, the camp commander Karl Fritzch selected 10 hostages from among the prisoners in Block 14 in retaliation for the escape of a prisoner. He condemned them to death by starvation in the bunker of Block 11. During the selection, a Polish prisoner who was a Franciscan monk and missionary, Maksymilian Kolbe (no. 16670), stepped out of the link and asked the camp commander to take him instead of a desperate selected prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek (np. 5659). After a brief dispute with Father Kolbe, Fritzch agreed to the substitution, especially when he found out that Kolbe was a Catholic priest. The 10 selected prisoners were led off to Block 11. In the Bunker Register, the admission of them is noted without listing names, numbers, day of admission, or day of death. Franciszek Gajowniczek survived the war and died in 1995. Maksymilian Kolbe was murdered with a poisonous injection on 14 August 1941. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in October 1982. The Italian Chapel in Orkney is a highly ornate, tiny Roman Catholic chapel on the uninhabited island of Lamb Holm. Built during World War II by Italian prisoners of war. Now looked after by local volunteers and the Scotland's Churches Trust. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ⛪ 🇮🇹

I’m still thinking about this. It’s great that this unduly lenient sentence is being reviewed BUT: 1. It should not take public outrage for this to happen in 2026; 2. The sentencing guidelines must be urgently reviewed; 3. Judge Nicholas Rowland must be removed. He chose to protect and praise serial rapists. No excuses. He must go.

This morning, 85 years ago, the British battle-cruiser HMS Hood was destroyed by fire from German battleship Bismarck, the culmination of an 8 min fight in the Denmark Strait. Last year I attended the annual dinner of the HMS Hood Association to commemorate the loss. Couldn't 2026 but here's a display from 2025 of men & boys among 1,415 lost in the ship, also pictured, & some rivets from Hood (which landed aboard HMS Prince of Wales after the fatal explosion). On this day at 0600 HMS Hood was torn apart in the Denmark Strait. In moments, 1,415 sailors were lost to the sea. Yet even now 85 years later their courage and sacrifice still echo through the Royal Navy they served. We remember HMS Hood. We remember her ship’s company.
