Beautiful Brodie Castle near Forres in Moray, seen on an absolutely perfect day. Parts of the structure may date back to the 1100s, though the earliest positively identifiable date for any standing section of the castle is 1567. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/forres/brodiec…

The outstanding beach at Calgary Bay, near the north-western tip of the Isle of Mull. In 1876 its name was given to a fort that would become the city of Calgary in the western Canadian province of Alberta. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/mull/calgary/i…

Two former cruise liners, 'Hermes' and 'Highland Queen', which provided temporary accommodation for non-local workers at the #Nigg Yard, mid-1970s. Both ships were built in Govan in 1930; 'Hermes' was originally called 'Princess Joan' and 'Highland Queen' was originally 'Princess Elizabeth'. In the foreground is the dock gate which could be opened to allow the platforms to be floated away. [photo: Alan Bush]

Skara Brae is northern Europe’s best-preserved Neolithic village. Situated on the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland, this remarkable set of dwellings was first occupied over 5,000 years ago and used for about 600 years thereafter. 1. 📷 Jim Richardson: nessofbrodgar.co.uk/skarabrae/

RMS Columba was probably the most famous Clyde steamer in David MacBrayne's fleet. Built in 1878 by J & G Thomson at Clydebank, she sailed from Glasgow to Ardrishaig until withdrawn in 1935. [source: HLH Archives, D1751/2/1/21]

740 years ago today. King Alexander III died in a fall from his horse near Kinghorn in Fife on 19 March 1286. His death ended a golden age in Scottish history and caused a crisis of succession that led to the Wars of Independence with England. More: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/kinghorn/kingh…

Since we're getting closer to Scotland's tourist season, I'm looking forward to the things I get to show people around the country. One of those is something that sounds simple, but everybody always loves. Heading to the Isle of Skye on Scotland's last operating turntable ferry!

Luss, Loch Lomond, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Tucked along the western shore of Loch Lomond in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, this village is lined with neat stone cottages that burst with colourful flowers in spring and summer. The sheltered bay and long pier offer stunning views across the water to Ben Lomond, a peaceful spot with a pebble beach perfect for a gentle stroll by the water. The village also has deep roots going back over 1,500 years - the Luss Parish Church stands on an ancient site, and the graveyard holds a rare 11th-century Viking hogback stone.

For a few months in 1939, #Inverness had three Ness Bridges. Construction of the temporary bridge, designed to carry traffic while the new bridge was built and the suspension bridge dismantled, began in January and was completed by early May. Work on the replacement bridge began in July but work was suspended a month after the outbreak of WWII [photos: HLH Libraries & Aberdeen Weekly Journal]
