Farmers now face a major decision:
AgriSA has just rejected the legal action against the Department of Agriculture brought by Sakeliga, the Free State Agricultural Union, and the South African Agricultural Initiative.
In doing so, AgriSA has placed itself firmly in the pro-government camp.
The only major agricultural union that has not yet adopted a clear position is the Transvaal Agricultural Union.
Historically, support for a particular agricultural union has been largely hereditary. Farmers typically belong to the same union their fathers did.
This may prove to be a watershed moment — one in which farmers are forced to choose a union based on its political stance, rather than on tradition or “my grandfather’s and my father’s union”-type loyalty.
