@larissaphillip I'm a fan of bridging to an uncomfortable modality by providing the initial instruction well within someone's comfort zone, which in most cases is probably videos.

Early elementary reading teachers and tutors, if you were going to design materials for parents with low literacy skills to help them engage with their children in early literacy activities, what would you suggest?
It could be::
- low level decodable books
- uncontrolled text that parent reads with a literacy tutor that explains how to encourage literacy skills in their children (if this, what would it say?)
- flash cards?
- videos?
I’m getting requests for this and thinking about adding it to our curriculum.

@itsme_urstruly Most folks with dementia can tell when they're being talked to like a child. Talk to them as equals - they'll feel better and in some instances their behavior will improve. (speech pathologist)

@MrBallen A friend of mine has a ranch in Idaho. He told me a whole crew of migrant workers quit several years ago because of the old building they slept in. Figures were waking them up at night and demanding they follow them into the mountains. It's much scarier to hear him tell it.

It’s World Book Day. What are you reading?!
Me: (Wuthering Heights, which I randomly started reading because I needed a book on my phone and it was .99 cents. Firmly in the camp of pro-WHers. It’s so weird and good!)

@larissaphillip They weren't teenagers yet, but the moment my boys started reading of their own free will was when I stopped pushing "normal" books and let them dive head first into Calvin and Hobbes and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I'd have to tell them to stop reading and go to bed.

Despite most of the comments leaning toward choosing a fun book, over a (still related to interest) more knowledge-building book, the poll came out with historical fiction ahead of the k-pop drama.
(I think we are going with the k-pop drama and then following it with historical fiction.)

Is it better for teenagers who are struggling readers to read a book, with support in a tutoring session, that is of their exact interest, or knowledge/building historical fiction that they might not read otherwise?
