During my NYSC last year in Adamawa State, our CDS group visited a prison. Till today, I genuinely don’t think I’ve recovered from what I saw there. We went there with good intentions. We carried detergents, food items and other little things we thought would help them. The plan was simple talk to the inmates, encourage them, advise them and remind them that life could still change for the better. The moment we entered the prison compound, the atmosphere changed completely. One of the officers told us to drop all our phones inside a small office before going further. At first I didn’t think much of it, but the moment that door closed behind us, I started feeling uncomfortable. The silence inside that place was not normal. As we approached, the officers ordered them to come out and sit on the floor for us. Around 70 of them slowly walked out and sat quietly without making noise. Most of them were very young. Maybe around 21 to 28 years old. Boys that looked like they should still be in school or hustling outside trying to survive life. But what shocked me first was their appearance. Almost all of them looked extremely skinny. Their hair was completely barbed low to the point where you could clearly see the shape of their skulls. Not normal skinny… the kind that makes you uncomfortable when you look too long. Then I noticed an old man sitting among them.

The questions many are afraid to ask! I am not dismissing the Islamic propagation objectives associated with Usman Dan Fodio's Jihad. However, on a broader scale, the primary purpose behind the campaign and the so-called holy war appears to have been political, a mission aimed at conquering and controlling much of Northern Nigeria through traditional institutions, all garmented in the name of Islamic Jihad. The replacement of existing rulers with loyal Fulani emirs across several Hausa kingdoms raises questions that cannot simply be ignored under the banner of religious reform alone. If Usman Dan Fodio's Jihad was purely Islamic and not political, why did he wage war against the Borno Kingdom, an already established Islamic empire? Why was the last Hausa ruler of Zazzau killed despite being a Muslim, only for a Fulani Emir to be installed in his place? Why was the last King of Kano removed, brutally murdered despite being a Muslim, and replaced with a Fulani Emir? And if the movement was solely about Islam, why was political authority rarely entrusted to other ethnic groups, even after accepting Islam, except to the Fulani? These are historical questions that deserve honest reflection, not emotional reactions. History should be examined honestly, not selectively.

Well you are the first account that started separating the myth of “Hausa Fulani” being related, I remember your tweet of Fulani being more close to Igbos than Hausa. I don’t have problem with you for promoting and pushing your ethnicity, infact I love people that are proud of who they are, but the problem is Hausa people doing the same thing not even as extreme, are called bigots or causing division, if they are bigots, so are you. You once posted the photo of Dan Fodiyo and captioned it “Conquerer” which a lot of Hausa people don’t see him as someone that conquered them but a savior, & telling them to their face they have been conquered by your ancestors; which they don’t see as enemies but as kins. Days ago you referred to a herder destroying farms as a “Big Kado”. I could list 100 examples from your account. I have never seen you insult Hausas directly but your account and most of the replies remind Hausa people that there’s no that much unity they thought, you see and regard them as any other tribe, which is fine. You’re not bigot, it is only controversial because you are dealing with “Hausa Fulani” and presenting them a mirror they always look away from.
voice-of-Fulɓe@Fulani_Tutor

I love Hausa people, I have never insult them here but if you have evidence send it and I’ll apologize. Till then stop accusing me of what I did not do. If you insult me for defending innocent Fulani people I’ll respond in Fulfulde or ignore you.
