Today marks five months since the US and Israel launched their war against Iran. Let's review what changed five months later. The Iranian regime is still there, some might argue that it's much stronger and popular in Iran than it was before the war. Iran's military capabilities have been seriously degraded but they can still attack and bomb any country, tanker, US base in the region at their will. Iran's proxies have been degraded as well, but are still around. Hezbollah is still a major threat and a headache for Israel. Iran's militias in Iraq are firing at Saudi Arabia and the Houthis are in control of the Bab el mandeb crossing. Iran's nuclear program, though heavily battered and degraded, is still largely intact, and all the enriched Uranium is still in Iran's possession. The only real change that happened during the war was that the Hormuz strait, which was an open and free crossing before the war, has now been mined by Iran, which has complete control over it and plans on monetizing it in the form of massive tolls on crossing ships. Between 3,500 and 6,000+ people have died in Iran because of the war, depending on official and military estimates. This total includes over 1,700 civilian deaths alongside military and security personnel. The damage to Iran's infrastructures and industries is massive. Iran suffered approximately $270 billion in direct and indirect economic damage from the start of the war. 18 US soldiers have been killed and over 624 have been wounded and are now listed as casualties by the Pentagon. The Department of War also claims the war cost $37 billion, but other estimates put the real cost at more than $100 billion when you factor in the damage that was inflicted on US bases and military hardware. Where do we go from here? There are basically three scenarios. 1. The US just walks away from the war leaving the Iranian regime in control of Iran and Hormuz. 2. The conflict gets "frozen" with both sides waging a war of attrition over the strait of Hormuz until one side capitulates and lets the other side control it. 3. The US, Israel and maybe some GCC countries launch an all out war on Iran, which includes a ground invasion by either US forces or American/GCC proxies, and don't stop until they destroy the regime. It's hard to see how any diplomatic solution can solve this as was already proven by the failed MoU which has been dubbed the "Memorandum of Misunderstanding". I would estimate that scenario 2 is the base case here, and that being said, this war of attrition over Hormuz can escalate to full blown war again simply by miscalculation and if it won't it can get dragged on for weeks, months and even years.
