How Many More Civilian Deaths Before Accountability? For years, I have documented and spoken about the pattern of erroneous military air strikes in conflict zones across northern Nigeria. From Rann to Tudun Biri and now Tumfa market in Zamfara, the cycle remains the same: civilians killed, communities devastated, and little or no transparent accountability. If reports that over 100 civilians died in Tumfa are accurate, this cannot be treated as another “mistake” that fades from public memory. International humanitarian law requires distinction, proportionality, and precaution in armed conflict. Bombing a crowded weekly market without adequate verification raises serious legal and ethical concerns. The survivors deserve independent investigation, public disclosure of findings, accountability for violations, and meaningful reparations. A state fighting insecurity must not repeatedly turn civilians into casualties of war.
