Hindus often face mockery for revering cows and not eating beef. But the larger message about protecting an animal that serves humanity with every ounce of its being is rarely understood. In the iconic book 'To Kill A Mockingbird' the main metaphor is of innocent mockingbirds that do nothing but “sing their hearts out” for everyone, and therefore it is a “sin” to kill such a pure being. For Hindus, the cow is exactly such a pure being, and even if we look at it unemotionally, there is no denying its immense contribution.
