Likewise for West Asia/the Middle East, where the Sykes-Picot legacy lives on. @magattew conflates formal colonial rule with colonial control. Vietnam managed to fully kick out both France and the US, reunified the North and the South, and kept its sovereignty. All African leaders who attempted the same have been systematically eliminated (see Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's divisive leader, for a recent example), ensuring Africa forever bears the open wounds of its colonial legacy. But Ms. Wade is right on one thing: Vietnam owes its prosperity to overcoming colonial rule. Maybe Africa can become prosperous if Africans do the same.

I was thinking about our name, Nigeria, so I decided to Google why it was named that, and I found something that shocked me. Nigeria was named after the Niger River, and everyone knows that, but the question is: why was the river named Niger? The River Niger is not black, so why was it given that name? The Latin word for black is niger (related to negro), so apparently Flora Shaw, in 1897, named our country Niger-ia, which literally means “black land” or “land of black people.” This feels like racism at its peak, and we accepted such a representation of our people from the British. Nigeria was never originally intended to be the name of a country.
