This week in 1964 was the start of Senate debate on the Civil Rights Act. There were no round-the-clock sessions. The Senate debated for nearly 3 weeks before voting 67-17 to approve the motion to proceed to the bill. On March 12, the Senate gaveled out at 6:51 pm
