NHS workers are being stripped of their pensions and removed from NHS employment by a trust that covers Bath, Swindon and Salisbury hospitals. Staff are being told they will have to re-register with a private equity company if they want to keep working. I used to be a governor at one of the hospitals involved, and I’ve have seen the internal documents. This is straight out of the PFI playbook - and it’s happening right now. Having worked out that voters don’t like it when you threaten to dismantle one of the UK’s greatest achievements - the NHS -, he resorts to bare face lying. Be clear, there is no doubt that if he gets into power, the NHS will be over.

SHE FILMED DYING PATIENTS BEING NEGLECTED Margaret Haywood had been a nurse for over 20 years when she decided she had seen enough. Elderly patients at the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton were being left to die alone. Others waited hours to use the toilet. Complaints had already been made. So in 2004, she agreed to go undercover for a @BBCPanorama investigation. She wore a hidden camera for 28 shifts on an acute medical ward. The programme aired in July 2005. The nation watched. People were horrified. Then the Nursing and Midwifery Council (@nmcnews) stepped in. Not to investigate the hospital. To investigate Margaret. In April 2009, she was struck off the nursing register. The charge: breaching patient confidentiality. The patients she filmed had all given consent after the fact. The hospital had a zero-star rating and an £8 million deficit before she ever set foot there with a camera. None of that mattered. The public response was instant and furious. Over 43,000 people signed a Royal College of Nursing petition in her support. An MP tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons. She was sacked from her job as a nurse training manager because of the NMC ruling before she even had a chance to appeal. Three days before her High Court appeal was due to be heard, the NMC quietly backed down. The striking-off order was replaced with a one-year caution. She got her registration back. Her barrister pointed out the problem nobody wanted to say: because the NMC settled before the case was argued in court, the fundamental conflict between patient confidentiality and patient safety was never actually resolved. The question of what a nurse is supposed to do when the system fails them was left deliberately unanswered. The hospital carried on. The regulator carried on. Margaret Haywood nearly lost her career for doing the job the hospital refused to do. That is not an accident. That is how the system protects itself. This is what a shithole country does to sick patients who have run out of money for treatment. The NHS is our most precious public service. Lose it at our peril

NHS DESTROYED A DOCTOR FOR TRYING TO SAVE LIVES Dr Raj Mattu was a cardiologist at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry. In 2001 he noticed something that should have been blindingly obvious to management: cramming five patients into a cardiac ward designed for four was killing people, because essential services like oxygen were being cut off. He went to the @BBC. He named the problem. He tried to save lives. Management's response was to suspend him in 2002 and then bury him under a deluge of around 200 complaints to the General Medical Council. Not one. Not ten. Two hundred. Every single one was rejected. A tribunal later found that a senior manager had openly said: "Don't worry, as far as Raj is concerned, we are not worried about a parking ticket, we want to get him off the road completely." The suspension arrived within weeks. @sharmilaxx Dr Mattu suffered detriments on more than 25 separate occasions. NHS even hired private investigators to try to discredit him. A 2005 inquiry chaired by Andrew Stafford QC recommended he be reinstated. Management ignored it. He was finally dismissed in 2010. The tribunal process ran for six months and produced a 400-page judgment. The total legal cost to the @NHS is estimated at over £11 million in taxpayers' money. Coventry Live All to silence one doctor who told the truth. He was eventually awarded £1.22 million in compensation. The managers who orchestrated the campaign mostly remained in post. David Loughton, the CEO who oversaw the whole thing, is now a CBE. I know a fraction of what Dr Mattu went through. In 2024 I was the target of 3 fabricated complaints. Three. And even that was enough to make me understand exactly how this weapon works. You do not need evidence. You just need volume, institutional backing, and the willingness to grind someone down for as long as it takes. Dr Mattu said it best himself: the people who lost out most were the patients. For 13 years the trust prevented him from looking after them. And by doing so, they sent a message to every other NHS whistleblower: this is what happens if you speak up. Nothing has changed. NHS OFFERED A DOCTOR £120,000 TO SHUT UP. SHE SAID NO. A CHILD DIED. Dr Kim Holt (@drkimholt) was a paediatrician at St Ann's Hospital in Haringey. In 2007 she and three colleagues wrote a formal letter to Great Ormond Street Hospital management warning that staff shortages and poor record-keeping at the children's clinic were going to get someone killed. They were not vague about it. They said a child would die. Management's response was to force her out of the job on what she described as wholly spurious grounds. Then they offered her £80,000 to go quietly, sign a gagging order, and never speak about Haringey again. She refused. By the time Baby Peter came through the clinic, not one of the four permanent senior consultants was in place. In their absence, an inexperienced locum saw the 17-month-old boy and sent him home. He had a broken back. He died 48 hours later. After the death made national headlines, Great Ormond Street raised the offer to £120,000. Dr Holt refused again. She spent four years on special leave. Her post was quietly advertised while she was still technically employed. The BMA had to intervene. She eventually founded Patients First to support NHS whistleblowers, because the system that failed Baby Peter was still very much in place, just wearing a nicer tie. An independent NHS London report later found Dr Holt to have a spotless record and recommended reinstatement, and also found serious management failings at GOSH. The hospital took months to act on it. Nobody in management was disciplined. After four years, GOSH issued a public apology and reinstated her. Lovely. Very touching. The child was still dead. This is what institutional self-protection looks like. Not mustache-twirling villains. Just managers processing paperwork, protecting budgets, and hoping the doctor with the inconvenient concerns would take the money and disappear. She didn't. Remember her name.
