Troops loaded the British Horsa glider through a side door set behind the cockpit. Cargo was unloaded through this door or the tail section after separation from the rear fuselage at the bulkhead.

A Look at the Horsa Glider The British-made Horsa, a wooden, high-wing monoplane, could carry a wide variety of cargo up to around 7,000 lbs, about twice the capacity of its American counterpart. Almost 5,000 Horsa gliders were built during WWII.

Flight Officer James Campbell used this practice signal device for Radio Codes during his ground school training. This device helped him perfect his Morse Code skills, needed to communicate effectively if verbal radio communication was not possible.

In preparation for flight training, student glider pilots took Ground School courses. Topics include: meteorology, navigation & use chemical warfare protective equipment. These students at South Plains Army Air Field attended Navigation class between training flights.
