A similar custom exists in Japan as well. Although we Japanese don't use eggs, for over a thousand years we have had a custom of rubbing talisman against our bodies to draw out evil spirits, and then burning it.

@ayanakajima3 For fevers, my mother (🇩🇴) would rub a raw egg on my head, take the egg to a street corner and toss it. The egg would "absorb" the fever; shattering it released the spirit. Apparently this was a superstition she learned from a Jamaican friend. Much less haunting...

I should finish the trilogy, but I am not being (intentionallu) contrarian or provocative when I say that The Winter King was one of the most infuriating, absurd and generally unlikable historical novels I've ever read. By halfway through I could have slapped Cornwell had he walked into the room.

@Purl_Pathogen @Hieraaetus To be honest, this wasn't my first Cornwell book, so maybe i'm just used to it. If i recall correctly, i also thought the one i read first was weird - but i begun to like it nonetheless. It's very dry, but that's what makes it real.

@Musketeer889 @Hieraaetus I disliked every single character. The writing struck me as very cold (probably appropriate given the title), and the way the story was presented seemed very confusing. Just couldn't get past the first 100 pages. I suppose it happens, not every book lands with every reader...
