Yakoke (thank you) to the @ChickasawNation Cultural Center for welcoming some of our MHS Native American Club students last Friday! We got a tour of the museum and the traditional village, and we enjoyed a dance demonstration! If you’ve never visited this site, please do! ❤️

Yesterday, MHS Native American Club and FCCLA collaborated in a volunteer outing to Feed the Children. We packed over 400 boxes of food for families in the area. Thank you, Feed the Children, for welcoming us every year and for your efforts to ensure that no child goes hungry. ❤️

Happy Native American Heritage Day! We’re shouting out one more Native-owned business today, but we hope you make it a practice to find and support these businesses year-round! Thanks for spending this #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth learning with us! #NativePride

For our last Munchie Monday, let’s talk about a modern Indigenous food! Frybread is an example of the resourcefulness of Native people, and everyone has their opinions on the best way to make it. 😋 #NativePride #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

If you’re looking for a picture book that brings the Wampanoag perspective to the traditional Thanksgiving narrative, check out Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s Thanksgiving Story! And for older readers, Braiding Sweetgrass is a must-read. It comes in a beautiful Young Adults version!

It’s Word Wednesday! Let’s talk about treaties. Did you know that treaties between tribal nations and the United States were not written with expiration dates? Ending a treaty requires an abrogation act from Congress, and very few treaties have ever been abrogated.

Looking for a food that’s both filling and nutritious? Try some wild rice! This week’s Munchie Monday features a recipe from the Citizen Potawatomi Nation! Wild rice was an essential food for Potawatomi people when they lived in the Great Lakes region.

Today’s Reading Thursday recommendations are Bowwow Powwow by Brenda J. Child (perfect for picture book storytime) and We Still Belong by Christine Day (a wonderful read for middle-grade students). Happy reading! #NativePride #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth
