Jakye Benjamin already showing his shooting ability with two big 3 in the to get the momentum in the Mustangs favor.

The Cougars are being a little too careless with too many turnovers which leading to points. The cougars got to play much better in the second quarter if they want this game to get away from them. The Mustangs playing their game and getting turnovers and beating the with the ball movement and scoring. Let’s see is if they can keep the momentum.

Both teams traded turnovers and buckets to start the second quarter, but Jaxson Dragg really changed the game for the Cougars. He knocked down two back to back threes, one from each wing, to tie it up at 21-21 and slow the Mustangs’ momentum.
Make that three big threes. Dragg hit another one to give the Cougars a 24-21 lead, then kept applying pressure by finishing a fast break after a steal and getting fouled to make it 26-21. He scored 11 straight points for the Cougars, and just like that the momentum completely shifted. Newnan went on a 24-6 run. The Cougars started closing passing lanes and jumping routes, turning interceptions into easy opportunities.
That second quarter completely flipped the flow of the game, as the Cougars held the Mustangs to just 6 points. Now we head into halftime, where adjustments matter most. Can the Mustangs slow Newnan down in the second half, or will the Cougars keep riding this momentum and start to pull away? Let’s see what the coaches dial up coming out of the break.

The Mustangs came out firing to start the third quarter. Jakye Benjamin knocked down a three, followed by a pull up jumper from Devin Chester. After a defensive rebound, Benjamin pushed it in transition, finished the fast break, went to the line, and converted the free throw to cap an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 37-32. That burst forced the Cougars to call a timeout at the 6:22 mark to regroup and make sure the momentum didn’t fully swing.
Newnan finally got on the board in the second half at the 5:40 mark with a mid range jumper from Eric Coleman. Even then, the Mustangs continued to chip away, trimming the double digit deficit down to six with 4:52 left. Benjamin struck again with a big three plus the foul, pulling Mount Vernon within 41-38.
The Cougars responded with a shifty mid range bucket from Coleman and a strong offensive rebound dunk by Landon Thomas. The final two and a half minutes turned into a free throw battle, as both teams were in the bonus, and the last 30 seconds got scrappy with loose balls and both sides fighting for possession.
It was a completely different quarter for the Mustangs, who went from scoring just 6 points in the second quarter to putting up 21 in the third after halftime adjustments. The question now is whether they can carry that momentum into the fourth, or if the Cougars will counter and regain control.

Momentum tried to swing, but Jaylin Brown came up with a huge, aggressive steal for the Cougars and finished it on the other end with a strong fast break layup to push the lead to 55-47. That play forced the Mustangs to burn a timeout.
With 1:25 left, the Cougars held a seven point lead and the Mustangs were forced to foul, sending Newnan to the free throw line. The Cougars took advantage, extending the lead to 58-49. Over the final three minutes, most of Newnan’s points came at the line, where Jaylen Britt spent a lot of time calmly closing the door and sealing the game.
