A #resister novel for these times. A modern Virgin Mary in post-Roe Florida sets the childless ladies cats amongst the culture war pigeons. Part thriller, part political satire and beyond belief. Please consider. 🙏 Michael.J Roberts #Roevember 7 chapters free on Kindle. 🙂

“Atheists will never get to Heaven!” Most of us know this. We also know we won’t get to Oz, Middle-earth, Narnia, or Valhalla. But we can still choose to be decent people anyway, right?

@roberthilburn Randy! Add to that Jimmy Webb, John Fogerty, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Carly Simon, Tom Waits!!! Overlooked for Ms. Swift (great human, average songwriter) and bloody Diane Warren - purveyor of McDonald's for the ears. What a shambolic, uneven mess of a list it is.

The NYT list of greatest living American songwriters would have been much stronger if it included Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, who are American citizens and have lived here chiefly for over half a century. Another shameful omission: Randy Newman.

@batcountry1980 Their legacy is such that they now exist in a dimension that only they occupy, I think. They are so completely part of modern music and yet somehow separate and distinct. That's some strange magic right there. 🙂

The true measure of The Beatles is that everyone is measured against The Beatles. That’s not me claiming they’re the best or greatest, as music’s totally subjective. But when someone does try to make that claim about an artist, inevitably it’s the Beatles they’re put up against.

#OTD in 1999 we lost one of my favorite actors, Oliver Reed. He could play a nasty villain (Bill Sykes in Oliver!), romantic lead (wrestling nekkid with Alan Bates in Women In Love) and terrified victim (Ben in Burnt Offerings) - wow, that’s diversity. I sure wish he drank less.

@azsweetheart013 @realDonaldTrump Constantly failed upwards because of his father's money. Though he's a textbook case of arrested development with the I.Q. & insight of a functional moron, it's forgiven because, sadly, for many Americans money covers a multitude of sins. Like "I'm Waiting For The Man" reimagined for the Pat Garret & Billy The Kid soundtrack, Warren Zevon's "Carmelita" is one of the great sad ballads of the 1970's: part debauched LA travelogue, part working class romance, part Bizarro World Eagles. Rock-by-way-of Raymond Chandler.

Critics had knives drawn for the 2nd album by Paul McCartney’s new band Wings, Red Rose Speedway (out today, 1973), but can any Paul album be that bad? “My Love” is soothingly melodic, while “Get On The Right Thing” and “When The Night” go down easy. Not Wings’ best, but decent.
