Publication Alert🔔 Our latest viewpoint, "The Frame That Kills: Post-Abortion Care, Colonial Penal Law, and the Right to Health," is now published in the @hhrjournal. In this viewpoint, @afyanahakiug's authors, Dr. @jessica_oga, Dr. @MulumbaMoses_, @stuartlawrenc, @MwebeFatina, and @nimrodmuhumuza, examine how colonial-era penal laws continue to undermine access to post-abortion care and reproductive health services across Africa. They argue that the central legal problem with the Court of Appeal's judgment is the conflation of post-abortion care with abortion itself, allowing lawful emergency treatment to be prosecuted as a criminal offence. This framing fuels stigma, exposes healthcare workers to legal risk, and undermines the right to health. The piece calls for clearer legal distinctions and rights-based reforms to protect access to essential care. Read the full viewpoint here: hhrjournal.org/2026/05/06/the…

The Kampala Charter on Decriminalizing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Africa reflects a growing continental consensus on the need to move beyond formal legal commitments toward meaningful implementation. Adopted in August 2025 at the 3rd Annual Reproductive Justice Litigation Baraza, the Charter situates SRHR within Africa’s established human rights framework while directly addressing persistent structural barriers, including colonial criminal law legacies, limited enforcement of progressive law and policy pronouncements, and shifting geopolitical pressures. It outlines a set of guiding principles and assigns clear responsibilities across state and non-state actors, with an emphasis on coordination, accountability, and evidence-based engagement. This explainer highlights the Charter’s core ideas and its relevance for ongoing legal, policy, and advocacy efforts. The full Charter is available at tinyurl.com/2p9t8s2u

Strategic partnerships remain central to harnessing Africa’s full potential in health, human rights, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Together with @cehurduganda, we had the pleasure of engaging with Cate Nyambura, Senior SRHR Policy Advisor at The Dioraphte Foundation, who leads the Foundation’s SRHR strategy through its Social Initiatives in Africa, in a rich and forward-looking conversation grounded in shared priorities and strategic alignment. The conversation created space to deepen our understanding of each other’s work, priorities, and approaches, while identifying potential areas for collaboration to advance SRHR in Africa.

The documentary is now live. It examines what happens when reproductive health decisions are criminalised, tracing how individuals are drawn into the justice system and what that process looks like in practice. It reflects on the experiences of women who have been detained, medical professionals who have faced arrest, and legal practitioners navigating these cases, showing how institutions respond when deeply personal decisions are treated as offences. Through these perspectives, the film makes visible the gap between how laws are written and how they are experienced on the ground. It also considers the longer-term effects of these encounters with the system. Beyond the moment of arrest or trial, it looks at how people return to their communities, how stigma persists, and how access to care, support, and information shapes what comes next. In doing so, it raises questions about how justice is defined, who it serves, and what happens when legal systems intersect with vulnerability and limited choices. What happens when women are sent to prison because of their reproductive choices? This investigative documentary, produced in partnership with @AfricanIIJ and Litigating Reproductive Justice in Africa (LIRA) implementing partners in Senegal, examines abortion-related prosecutions and the broader realities faced by women under restrictive abortion laws. At the center of the story is "Hajara", a former detainee arrested for abortion, whose experience traces the journey of a woman navigating the criminal justice system. The documentary also features the perspective of a doctor who was once arrested for allegedly providing abortion services, a lawyer reflecting on cases he has litigated, and an activist supporting women imprisoned for abortion-related offenses as they reintegrate into their communities. Through these voices, the film explores the human cost of criminalization and how abortion laws, the justice system, and community responses shape the lives of women and those connected to these cases in Senegal. Premiering this Thursday. Don’t miss it: youtu.be/qiZn-efiikY

The “Give to Gain” theme for this year’s International Women’s Day reminds us that progress on rights and justice for women and girls requires intentional investment. At @afyanahakiug (Ahaki), the Africa Reproductive Justice Litigation Fund is central to how we support African organisations and advocates advancing reproductive justice for women and girls through legal action and advocacy. Through @afyanahakiug’s Litigating Reproductive Justice in Africa (LIRA) programme, legal practitioners from Benin, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Senegal, Uganda, and Zimbabwe convened to strengthen coordinated litigation strategies to challenge criminalisation and advance constitutional protections that secure reproductive justice. As LIRA expands and onboards new partners across the continent, it is building a stronger, cross-border litigation network to advance rights-affirming jurisprudence for reproductive justice in Africa.
