Toronto is already one of the financial capitals of North America. Rod Phillips is right - a global defence and resilience bank belongs here. 🇨🇦 Big opportunity for jobs, investment, and Canada’s economic leadership.

A Toronto location would put the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), which will serve allied governments, where the financial infrastructure is, writes Rod Phillips nationalpost.com/opinion/why-to…

Prime Minister Carney has to make up his mind. He spent the entire election campaign and his first year in office whipping up his base and all Canadians into an anti-American frenzy replete with boycotts, liberal virtue signaling and anti-Administration ads on the U.S. airwaves yet now says he wants "deeper integration" with the Americans? Perhaps he should have followed Mexican President Sheinbaum's lead: keep his, his ministers' and the Premiers' mouths firmly shut and focus on the less glamorous, less politically expedient, hard work of figuring out how to ensure the 75% of Canadian exports that are destined to the U.S. isn't torched by his partisan political ambitions.

The Conservative movement in Canada is alive and stronger than ever before. I truly believe that we will win the next election and that it’s only a matter of time until Pierre Poilievre becomes our next PM. Big thanks to @canstrongfree for putting on such an amazing event.

The feds are running a rebate program that pays Canadians to buy EVs not assembled in Canada. The feds alone communicated to manufacturers they would not allow Chinese EVs in the country just before reversing themselves and allowing 49,000 Chinese EVs to enter. And the feds introduced the EV mandate that didn't recognize hybrids and waited until the last minute to change it. Premier Ford can appropriately be held accountable for his government's decisions in the Ontario legislature. Happy to join you on your show to discuss.

12 years ago. The same $100 oil price. But gas was 45¢ cheaper. Why?

Kelly, I could not be more proud of you. Going from sleeping on a park bench to sitting in Parliament, from homeless to the House, is a journey that inspires everyone to overcome. You’ve been a professor, project manager, and parliamentarian. Scars are the trophies of our survival, and triumph over adversity is a superpower. Nothing can stop you now.

In @LawSocietyLSO news, it appears the LSO will reduce the number of lawyers elected to its Board, make it more difficult to elect lawyers from outside of Toronto at large, and like the CCP, appoint their friends to fill (10% of) seats. It is anticipated such changes will mean the next pay (or other) scandal never makes the papers. Secrecy is key to 'good gubernance.'

If you are spending 30% more than you make every year, then you choose to put $10,000 on a credit card to dedicate to high risk "investments", you are practicing Carneynomics.

I have long supported creating National and Provincial Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWF). However, I am skeptical of the announcement made by @MarkJCarney this morning. The typical SWF model is that you have a revenue source (Eg. Resource Royalties, Foreign Exchange) that is directed to a fund with political independence and a broad investment mandate (Eg. Norway, Singapore). I’m sure the devil will be in the details, but the proposed approach by the Federal Government does not follow these practices: 1) It is using national debt to make initial investments. In theory, if your return is greater than interest it can work, but it’s not ideal. 2) It’s investments are targeted at “major projects” in the “national interest”. But just like the Major Projects office, these are politically-prioritized. This makes me skeptical of the independence. 3) We should be more curious about why our independent wealth funds (CPP/Pensions/Private) and global capital are not more interested in major project investments. I think this comes down to permitting/regulatory certainty and speed which has not been solved for. I am open to being convinced with more details provided. We will absolutely need sovereign wealth in the future. Finally, our federal government does a substantial amount of “Industrial Policy” and “Economic Development” via subsidies. Changing our approach from grant to equity models has a lot of merit. Holding in a sovereign wealth fund could create more transparency about the performance of the “subsidies” we give in the first place.

The year is 2047. The Canadian Infrastructure Bank, the Canadian Sovereign Wealth Fund, the Canada Pension Plan and the Business Development Bank of Canada each nominate one warrior to fight to the death for the honour of owning a 15% stake of a new sushi restaurant.
