It also really sucks that it could have been avoided if Russian parts of Ukraine weren't given to Ukraine during the fall of the USSR. It's similar to India and Pakistan, where the British drew an arbitrary border.

Fine, you can make the argument that the separatists were just backed by Russia, and it's understandable that Ukraine wanted to keep Donbass, but they were careless if their missiles land on their own civilians.
