@Defetyhw You don't want to be empathetic with a suicidal person. Plus, i don't see how either would help really....being a good listener would maybe or something. Suicide is such a personal thing, I don't think it is anything short of hubris to say one has empathy with them.

@Defetyhw we aren't all different though....we are all the same. Anything i am, you are as well. And so for all of us. It is just by rando things that I am my type of self and you are yours. but we all have the ability because are all humans, same species (yes, even them loooool)

@Defetyhw sympathy is extremely effective and more frequent...there are many opportunities for both states, but empathy takes a lot more out of the subject and there are many objects one does not want to be empathetic with due to their nature but still want to retain sympathy.

@Defetyhw People cause stigmas by creating illusions of false hierarchies. And the others against them use the same context to object to them. Which creates a power dynamic. It does not matter how intensely someone feels something, or how often or how easily infers it - just the impact.

@Defetyhw I'd want them to kindly fuck off unless I reached out to them. Otherwise I have to sit around and reassure them that their "help" was effective or some crap.

@Defetyhw You don't have to worry about what they are capable of, only your own self. Policing others is really never ending hell and it degrades and steals from the person doing it. Not to say it harshly, but it is true. We can all be that person. We have been, in some sense to someone.

@Defetyhw So the most useful of the two choices in that realm of being would be sympathy, not empathy. I think removing it from all the qualifiers and looking it as people helpless due to default or design....it can help change the inflammatory charge that wells up.

@Defetyhw A lot of those people have fallen for cult thinking and social acceptance. Regardless of right and wrong and whatever, disregarding if they are aggressors or victims as well....the one thing that is true, is that they are ignorant of their condition or unable to help themselves.

@Defetyhw See, this is what I am saying....it is not about the degree you feel it or context. It is about how it affects you. You tearing at ASPCA, for example, is totally fine. If it makes you run into your room and shiver and cry all day, it is not. Because it disrupted your life.

@Defetyhw No, empathy is not about caring. Empathy's hallmark is that it has the subject assume the perceptions and then thus the feelings of the object as if they were their own. And this is not always about caring or sharing or the object at all after the initial event.

@Defetyhw Yes, but not regardless of terminology. The ONLY reason people don't like to be called intense or sensitive is because of the negative connotation. It would serve much more if that is removed from those words. When used as an insult, query the person how they are better.

@Defetyhw No, Def. They don't. That's the issue. People romanticize them and it doesn't actually mean anything or help anyone. If someone is intense or sensitive or intuitive, they should be called as such and there should be no shame or insult in it. Arbitrary meanings are not useful.

@Defetyhw Because the issue isn't the intensity, the issue is the overeating. And with those who have empathic disorders, the intensity is not the issue, the empathy is. This is how you can tell if someone has just made it up to sell a book or coin a term....versus actual science and data

@Defetyhw None of them do because there is no "empath". Your first red flag should be that there are gradients and exceptions. Either a person is or is not a category in personal traits and characteristics. It's like saying someone doesn't overeat as intensely as another.

@Defetyhw So in the area of this we have three actual states: Empathy Deficit Disorder Empathy in general Hyper-Empathy Disorder An enormous amount of people are in the general category with a very tiny amount on both ends.

@Defetyhw It's like "emotional intelligence" which also doesn't exist and humorously is abbreviated to EQ which is emotional quotient not intelligence. But anyway, look...the defining characteristic of a disorder is that it disrupts your life. Hence the disorder tag on it.
