R3: This Way (2023). 'R3' stands for Return; Repatriation; Restitution. This piece adds voice to the call for the return of art objects and artifacts taken from Nigeria by colonialists and expatriates from the West. Several decades ago, most of these ancient artifacts and objects were transported to the West via waterways, but this work recognizes that the thievery continues today through trafficking, expropriation, and duress sales. In many ways, The Benin ivory mask has become a restitution iconography in the world today, and that is why the subject of the work wears it as a face while redirecting an airplane in the sky. With collaboration and shared ownership as some of the ethos of Web3, perhaps there is a role that NFTs can play in this important conversation. This piece is a part of "How High the Moon", an exhibition that explores the emergence of a new form and discourse in African Art. Curated by Jessica Deutsch, the show runs from September 7- October 21 @TheNFTGallery4 in New York, and includes incredible artworks by other amazing artists.
