Why is Miliband's response to the gas shock to insist we need LESS domestic gas supply? More North Sea production will make energy cheaper, more secure & less carbon intensive. And scrapping state-driven policy costs from taxes levies could cut bills 30%. My latest Critic👇

Small groups with something to lose are very effective at stopping change. That's one reason why getting necessary homes and infrastructure built can be so difficult. In our new paper, Onward sets out a proposal to introduce land readjustment to the UK, a land assembly mechanism that gives the people most likely to oppose a development, the landowners themselves, excellent reasons to support it. But how does it work? Working with a developer, land readjustment allows landowners to pool their plots into a single scheme so the area can be redeveloped as a whole. After the development, the landowners receive back a piece of land in the area, significantly more valuable than the plot they had before. The scheme can *only* go ahead if a supermajority of landowners who own a supermajority of the land in question support the scheme. This prevents any single or small group of landowners from vetoing a development while also motivating the developer to draw up a scheme that can win the support of most of the landowners, and to return to the drawing board if it doesn't. This democratic element makes land readjustment less fragile than assembling land by negotiating with each landowner, when any single party can refuse to engage or demand an extortionate price. It is also far more democratic than compulsory purchase. To learn more about land readjustment, and its use in other parts of the world, read our paper below. ukonward.com/reports/buildi…

@SunriseEnjoyer Latest for pollsters using the 18-24 age bands. YouGov and Lord Ashcroft still big outliers for the Greens (having them at > 50%) and for Reform (having them at < 5%) Green and Labour up slightly in the averages, Reform down noticeably (especially in JLP and Survation).

Today is windy. Wind is still only providing 50% of the generation on the grid. Look at the amount of power even on a day like today that's needed from gas and electricity imports.

Alarming story from @georginaquach: At one UK university, the scramble to attract lucrative international students to the new London campus saw thousands admitted without the necessary English or academic skills, widespread use of ghostwriters, and fraudulent attendance logging

The crisis in Iran & Middle East is causing the beginnings of a gas spike. This is because Britain is highly reliant on imports of liquid natural gas (LNG). This is - in part- because we don’t have sufficient domestic supply to meet our needs. 1/

China, India, Korea, and Pakistan all import huge volumes of LNG from Qatar. China and Korea have some buffer as a result of diversified pipeline supplies and gas storage. But India sources roughly half of its LNG from the Middle East. Pakistan is even more exposed, approx 99% of its LNG imports come from Qatar.

Britain has among the highest industrial energy costs in the world, while domestic bills drive inflation and harm living standards. New @ukonward research today shows how a third of our household bill costs come from policy choices. We set out the options to bring bills down👇

Article from 2024 says he was released on temporary licence (meaning he'd most likely have to return to the prison) But the Thames Valley Police report states he was of "St. Lawrence Road South" in Towcester which rather suggests he was released on licence/parole and was no longer on temporary licence. Need to wait for more information from the police to confirm that though.

@N1ckSteph Excuse my ignorance. Does this mean he was still required to return to the prison each night more recently or had he by now been freed indefinitely on parole/licence?

Gorton byelection: “concerning levels” of so-called family voting today say observers. See here ⬇️
Sam Coates Sky@SamCoatesSky

👀The Electoral Commission give Democracy Volunteers access to polling stations at election time. Only they and the police can go inside. They’ve just issued this report about “family voting” in Gorton and Denton: Democracy Volunteers deployed four accredited election observers across the Gorton and Denton Westminster Parliamentary By-election today. The team attended 22 of the 45 polling stations in the constituency, spending between 30 and 45 minutes in each. The observers worked in pairs using the international standard for election observation - the four eyes principle. Each team assessed several aspects of the polling process, from accessibility to issues around the integrity of the vote. Staff were welcoming to the team and we would like to thank them for their time in accommodating our work. The team assessed two significant aspects of electoral integrity - family voting (where two voters either confer, collude or direct each other on voting) which breaches the secret ballot. The team also assessed the impact of the requirement for voters to show ID before they are issued with a ballot paper. 2023 saw the enactment of the Ballot Secrecy Act, which made the practice of family voting more clearly a breach of the secret ballot, making it more enforceable by staff in polling stations. Signage is now available to discourage the practice. Signage was only seen in 45% of the polling stations observed. The observer team saw family voting in 15 of the 22 polling stations observed, some 32 cases in total, nine cases in one polling station alone. The team observed a sample of 545 voters casting their votes - meaning 12% of those voters observed either caused or were affected by family voting. Commenting John Ault, Director of Democracy Volunteers said; ‘Today we have seen concerningly high levels of family voting in Gorton and Denton. Based on our assessment of today’s observations, we have seen the highest levels of family voting at any election in our 10 year history of observing elections in the UK.’ ‘We rarely issue a report on the night of an election, but the data we have collected today on family voting, when compared to other recent by-elections, is extremely high.’ ‘In the other recent Westminster parliamentary by-election in Runcorn and Helsby we saw family voting in 12% of polling stations, affecting 1% of voters. In Gorton and Denton, we observed family voting in 68% of polling stations, affecting 12% of those voters observed.’ The team also observed cases of voters being turned away, however, in each case this was due to them not being a registered voter for Westminster elections, such as having EU citizenship, and only being allowed to vote in local elections. The team also saw a number of voters taking photographs of their ballot papers and one voter being authorised to vote despite them already having been marked as voted earlier in the day. Democracy Volunteers has informed elections staff at Manchester City Council about our findings today. This Statement is now available on the Democracy Volunteers website HERE. --

You know "entry requirements" for uni courses? They're fake. Unis put AAB when average entry is CCD. They're happy to lie to you. Even worse, what type of job can you get after your course? They'll say nearly whatever you want to hear. But gov has decades of data on employment after uni (called the LEO data). They know which courses lead to jobs, and which don't. But they won't make the full data public. Students, parents and the public deserve to know the truth. We shouldn't let uni's hide this anymore. We should make the data public. It's as easy as hitting "publish". This isn't a difficult problem - they can just get it done! Release the records!
Looking for Growth@lfg_uk

Students & parents should know the facts before they take out the debt. But the truth about graduate earnings has been hidden for years. Government has records tracking graduate earnings, but they refuse to publish them in full. It's time for the truth. Release the records.

James has been a delight to have as part of the @ukonward team. Someone who totally gets the new media and how to use it to drive change. And also at the heart of the work to make the centre-right the home of the builders once again. Our loss is Focaldata’s gain.

Honestly what's up with polls showing ~60% of British youth support Greens or Labour? For reference, more 18-29 year old U.S. Latinos/Hispanics voted for Trump in 2024 (40%) than it looks like 18-29 year old UKians support Reform, Restore, Tories, and LibDems combined.

More young men and women support Restore Britain than the Tories and the Lib Dems - after less than two weeks, we're catching Labour and Reform already... There is now a real alternative to give the establishment a middle finger. Restore Britain.
