The team is currently as healthy as it's ever been, with Amadio and Kessel, guys who played the entire season, riding the bench as healthy scratches. Outside of the laundry list of injuries in net, the team is fully healthy on defense and at forward. Not only have they been healthy, but they caught a real break in round one against the Winnipeg Jets, who on paper, appeared to be a tough matchup. The Jets where without 3 of their top forwards and early on lost Josh Morrisey, their stud dman for the rest of the series. That allowed the team the rest it needed before the Edmonton series. I don't remember the last cup winner who didn't have at least one series win in 4 or 5 games. 2. Bruce Cassidy System Any system a coach employs only works if the team buys in. They have. Across the board. We heard rumors that the Cassidy system was goalie friendly and we see it on the ice regardless of who is in the net. Let's face it, coming into this season with Logan Thompson and Adin Hill didn't scare anybody in the league. I predicted Hill would end up the starter, one way or another, and he has been solid. The perfect type of goalie to complement the system. So why is the system goalie friendly? Support from the dmen in front clearing rebounds and moving traffic from out front. Most teams will have their dmen chase the forwards and leave the front of the net to retrieve pucks. Vegas dmen stay put. The downside is you allow your opponent more possession time, but the gamble is that the D bends, but doesn't break. 1. The Defense I don't remember who said it, but I have to imagine its true to say that Hague and Whitecloud are among the best "bottom two" you will see around the league. Each pair boasts a combination of an offensive minded D with a responsible partner. In some cases, like Pietrangelo you have both, but look down the lineup and you will see McNabb and Martinez doing a lot of the dirty work on the top two pairings, while the bottom two offer young legs and and above average skill levels for where they slot in the lineup. Considering the likes of Boston and Colorado are out, and the team held serve at home up 2-0, this is the best path to a Cup they have ever had, and likely ever will.
