At the 2026 Energy Storage Summit Australia, Senior Director Louie Trajkoski and Director Investment Ana-Marija Jurisic recently joined speaker panels to tackle the big questions facing our energy transition. They participated alongside key industry leaders, to discuss the critical role NAIF plays in supporting large-scale, long-life energy storage projects in remote regions across northern Australia. Through the discussions, attendees gained an understanding of the concessional tools we use to help de-risk projects, facilitate Indigenous participation and attract investment, ensuring that energy projects can move forward. Thank you to all attendees at the conference and to Louie and Ana for sharing their insights on how we’re helping to shape the future of Australia’s energy landscape. #EnergyAustralia #Renewables #EnergyStorage #Summit2026

Director Investment Ana-Marija Jurisic recently spoke at the Townsville Enterprise Limited Secure the Future: Green Energy Forum 2026. She was accompanied by representatives from CEFC, ARENA, and SMBC, and moderated by TEL CEO Claudia Brumme, on the topic “Powering Projects – Renewable Energy Finance.” It was an excellent opportunity to hold discussions that highlighted the emergence of a credible pipeline in renewables, sustainable aviation fuel, and other biofuels, supported by increasing global investor interest. The session provided attendees with insights into the impact of NAIF-supported projects across Townsville and North Queensland, and how concessional financing tools are enabling first-of-a-kind developments in the energy transition.

How long is the application process and what are the stages? On average, it takes around nine to twelve months to go through the NAIF finance process. There are several key stages along the way. We start with Early Assessment, then move into Advanced Assessment and Due Diligence. From there, projects progress to the Investment Decision stage, followed by Ministerial consideration. Once that’s complete, we move through contractual close, meet all the requirements to reach financial close, and then continue to work with proponents through loan management for the life of the project. Each stage is designed to ensure projects are well-developed, deliver strong outcomes, and create lasting benefits for northern Australia. Northern Australia’s growth depends on infrastructure that keeps pace with emerging industries, population change and regional priorities. At last week’s Townsville Industry Breakfast, Director of Stakeholder Engagement Matthew Derlagen joined regional leaders to discuss how NAIF’s financing tools can help proponents bring forward local infrastructure projects. Hosted by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, the event was a fantastic platform for industry, government and project partners to share insights, explore future opportunities and strengthen supply‑chain connections across the region. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions. If you would like to know more about how we can support your project, visit 👉 naif.gov.au/contact

Our Chief Strategic Policy & Engagement Officer Cathie McBean spoke on “Leading with Resilience and Purpose” at the Women in Leadership Conference in Perth yesterday. Cathie reflected on how her early life growing up on a cattle station in remote northern Australia shaped her approach to leadership — grounding her in adaptability, humility, and a strong sense of purpose. She shared how those experiences continue to guide her work at NAIF as we partner with communities, industry, and governments to deliver long term benefits for northern Australia. This conversation showed how lived experience, resilience, and purpose continue to shape the leadership needed to deliver long term outcomes for northern Australia.

There are currently around 100 abandoned mines throughout Queensland, many of which hold tailings and in-ground resources with the potential for re-commercialisation. The famed Mount Morgan mine was once one of the world’s largest gold producers until it's closure in the 1990's. Our latest case study reveals how the project is now delivering sustainable gold and copper, cleaner water, Indigenous engagement, and hundreds of jobs and regional income for local workers and suppliers. Find out how Heritage Minerals, backed by NAIF finance and innovative technology, has turned this challenge into an opportunity. Access the Heritage Minerals Case Study here 👉🏼 naif.gov.au/media-centre/h…
