Growing stem cells in space to treat cancer and disease. 🩸🚀 Researchers are working to produce high-quality stem cells in larger quantities in space. This could improve patient outcomes for people on Earth that have blood cancers, immune diseases, and other blood disorders. go.nasa.gov/4ealC8b

Another glimpse inside the @Space_Station Life Sciences Glovebox (LSG). It was time to provide the neocartilage mentioned in last week’s post with some fresh nutrients, so yesterday I conducted a media exchange. This nifty chamber designed for space has septa on each side, so I can attach 2 syringes – one to withdraw the old media, while simultaneously injecting fresh media. The glovebox helps us prevent contamination in the chamber and also protects us and the space station atmosphere from any potentially harmful chemicals.

The view from Orion as it climbs higher, faster, and farther from home. 🌕   Captured from Orion’s exterior cameras, this view shows Earth turning below as the spacecraft aligns for its apogee‑raise burn. One hour and 46 minutes after launch, the SLS upper stage fired for 18 minutes to push Orion into high Earth orbit — the first step on the path from our home planet to the Moon and beyond.

Behold the “space cake.” Making cakes on the @Space_Station with our rather limited “baking” supplies is an art, requiring creativity and resourcefulness. I loved making cakes for my crewmates on my first mission and considered myself adept, but our cosmonaut colleagues on Expedition 74 have certainly taken it to the next level. Here’s an example of their recent work, in celebration of 100 days in space for @astro_hathaway and @Soph_astro, and my 300th day. It tasted even better than it looked!

On her 75th birthday, we remember Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space! At the age of 32, this physicist and astronaut launched aboard Challenger in June 1983 for her first of two space missions. Her example inspired generations to reach for the stars. ✨

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage secured the freedoms that make great endeavors possible and continues to inspire generations of Americans to serve something larger than themselves. We remember them, and we remain forever grateful.

"A short time ago, at a NASA center not so far away..."    This week, John Knoll, Chief Creative Officer for Industrial Light & Magic -- and the Mandalorian and Grogu themselves -- visited Johnson Space Center. They learned about our work in human spaceflight, including through the International Space Station and Artemis, inspiring and benefitting humans in our own galaxy.
