SLC @ NASCENT-ERC

Thank you so much for volunteering your time Saturday at Explore UT! Our NASCENT activities drew a large crowd of kids and families. Your presence there allowed participants learn more about nanotechnology and nanomanufacturing – getting them excited about science/engineering.

We had a great presentation this past Friday from Qishen Zhao, Wei Jiang, Tianhao Yang, Shruti Jain, Xin Yang, Zizhuo Zhang, and Himmi Nallan. They spoke on "Reliable Processes for Controlled 2D Nanomaterials" and on "Limits of Precision in Functional Material Directed Assembly".

After a fun-filled week at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, Amritesh Rai, Kelly Liang, Liam Connolly, and Ziam Ghaznavi gave us a great report on the things they saw, ranging from new display technology to ping-pong playing robots.

NASCENT hosted a large group of students from Lanier High School last Fall for a tour of the labs and research facilities at UT's Pickle Research Campus. The students got a wonderful exposure to cutting edge STEM research at UT! More photos here: facebook.com/NASCENT.SLC/po…

NASCENT had a solid representation at the '2017 NSF ERC Biennial Meeting' held in Washington, D.C. earlier this Fall. We had a great time interacting with members of the NSF as well as the various NSF-funded ERCs from all over the US!

We were privileged to hear from Dr. Arvind Kamath, VP of technology development at Thin Film Electronics. His presentation focused on overcoming some manufacturing challenges faced in creating low cost, printed electronics on stainless steel substrates. Thank you Dr. Kamath!

We had a great seminar last week with Tsung-Fu Yao, David Choi, Mahmoud Behzadirad, and Liam G Connolly presenting on tip based and magnetic nanometrology. We also had a surprise presentation from NASCENT veteran Ian Ladner, who is finishing his Ph.D. research at the LLNL.

NASCENT's summer research program wouldn't be possible without the commitment of the grad student mentors! Congrats to the 2017 Best Mentor Awardees: JaeHyun Ahn, Juan faria, Andrew Cochrane, Nate Sheehan and Amritesh Rai! Nate and Amritesh also won the 2016 Best Mentor Awards!

Graduate student mentors Nathaniel Sheehan and Amritesh Rai organized a round table discussion with the 2017 NASCENT Young Scholar interns towards the end of their summer program. They answered a wide variety of questions from these inquisitive high school students!

Ke Chen, postdoc in Professor Yaguo Wang's group, gave an interesting talk on 'Optical Metrology of Electrical Properties of Transferred 2D Materials' during the Nov 10th Friday seminar. This was Ke's last talk at UT, as he now heads to @MIT for his second postdoc! Congrats Ke!

Shout out to our graduate student presenters from last Friday's seminar: Anshu Cherala, Brian Gawlik, Corey Staller and Robert Malakhov! Their topics covered different Thrust Projects such as Coating for Nanomanufacturing and Limits of Nanoshape Control. Keep up the good work!
