Did you know that Smokey The Bear-particularly the hat Smokey wore- was patterned after the Buffalo Soldiers. These were the Foundational Black American men who became the first National Park Rangers in the U.S.. From the late 1800s into the early 1900s, Buffalo Soldiers were stationed in and around early national parks and: Built roads and trails that allowed access to remote park areas Mapped terrain and established usable routes Protected land from illegal logging, grazing, and mining Stopped poaching and enforced conservation rules Removed squatters and unregulated settlers from protected land Maintained infrastructure (cabins, bridges, patrol routes) In other words, they quite literally cleared the way—physically and administratively—for what later became America’s national park system. #BlackHistoryMonth
