Oregon just took a step backwards on protecting patients from medical debt. Lawmakers quietly raised the threshold for automatic financial assistance screening from $500 to $1,500—making it less likely that working families get help before being billed. Here’s the problem: the original $500 policy was actually working. Hospitals didn’t lose money—they just reported it differently. ✔️ Charity care went up ✔️ “Bad debt” went down by nearly half That means fewer people were stuck with bills they couldn’t pay—and hospitals weren’t taking a hit to profits. Instead of building on a policy that reduced medical debt and improved transparency, this rollback puts more burden back on patients to navigate a complicated system on their own. When fewer people get screened automatically, fewer people get the help they already qualify for. That’s not reform! ow.ly/ig3950YK6Nk

💸 Nearly a decade. That is how long U.S. financial literacy has been stuck at the same level. According to the TIAA Institute-GFLEC Personal Finance Index, American adults correctly answer just 49% of basic financial literacy questions — and Gen Z scores even lower at 38%. The time to learn is before the stakes are high. NCL's LifeSmarts teaches middle and high school students how to build credit, manage debt, budget smarter, and make informed financial decisions before they ever need to. March Madness may be winding down, but the financial damage for some fans is just getting started. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that as sports betting expands, bankruptcy rates increase, especially among younger and lower-income Americans. NCL found that 93% of push notifications from major betting apps are ads, with zero federal regulation. It is time for policymakers to act. ow.ly/5TAE50YGGT3 #ConsumerAwarenessWeek #ConsumerProtection #SportsBetting #Basketball #MarchMadness

If corporations allow you to sign up with one click, you should be able to cancel with one click too. Subscription traps, whether from an app or gym membership, are just another way corporations take advantage of working people.  We've already put hundreds of companies on notice. This week, we proposed a rule that would make NYC a national leader in cracking down on abusive practices that nickel-and-dime New Yorkers.

What if the honey in your kitchen isn’t actually honey? It turns out honey is one of the most forged foods in the world. And here’s the strange part: even as Americans consume more honey than ever, many beekeepers are struggling. Why? Because a lot of what’s sold as honey is diluted, mislabeled, or routed through other countries to avoid tariffs or scrutiny. So the label says one thing. The economics say another. And it’s not just beekeepers who are affected — almond growers have a surprising stake in all of this, too. On this week’s episode of Freakonomics Radio, Steve Levitt explains why it matters. Let's talk about a public health issue hiding in plain sight: the cost of prescription drugs. 💊 PBMs have used opaque pricing practices to drive up costs for patients for years. NCL has been fighting for reform, and earlier this year, bipartisan PBM reforms passed as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, a step toward greater transparency and lower costs. But the work isn't done. Affordable medicine is a public health issue. #NPHW #NPHW2026 #DrugPricing #ConsumerHealth

Inflation just hit its highest point in nearly two years. The March Consumer Price Index report shows prices rose 3.3% year over year, driven largely by a 21.2% spike in gas prices. Everyday consumers are feeling it at the pump, at the grocery store, and everywhere in between. Live updates here: ow.ly/v6hz50YH8rM #Inflation #ConsumerProtection

The federal vaccine advisory panel was just rewritten from the inside. After a court ruled that most of Kennedy's ACIP appointees were "distinctly unqualified," the Trump administration responded by broadening the membership criteria and adding anti-vaccine aligned organizations to the committee. This comes on the heels of the CDC already cutting its recommended childhood vaccine schedule without scientific review. When politics replaces science on a federal vaccine panel, it is not just policy that suffers. It is lives. ow.ly/leuj50YH7MB #VaccineScience #PublicHealth #ConsumerProtection

A new OIG audit found that one of the biggest #PBMs failed to pass through funds required under its federal contract—resulting in more than $600 million in excess costs to the carrier and federal employee health plan. When PBMs don’t follow the rules, consumers and taxpayers pay the price. ow.ly/NM2750YH61C
