Public dollars demand public answers — and accountability. That’s why the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) investigates complaints, examines how public funds are managed, and reports the facts openly and transparently. Our work shines a light on how taxpayer dollars are spent and provides clear recommendations to correct misuse, strengthen oversight, and improve systems. Already in 2026, OSA has released several major audit reports that underscore the need for changes in organizations that directly affect everyday North Carolinians. Investigate for yourself! Each of these audit reports is available on our website (link in bio).

A new Rapid Response follow up report from the NC Office of the State Auditor found that approximately $15 million in FY 2025 expenditures were not recorded for months at Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools, obscuring the district’s true financial position during the year. The report also found that the district again failed to complete required monthly budget to actual reconciliations, a basic control meant to detect overspending early. The findings point to serious weaknesses in financial oversight and internal controls at one of North Carolina’s largest public school districts. State Auditor Dave Boliek remains committed to transparency, accountability, and restoring public trust by clearly explaining what went wrong and recommending the steps needed to safeguard public funds. 📄 Read the full report to learn more (link in bio)

🚨 Rapid Response Report: What’s going on at WSFCS? A new follow up report from the NC Office of the State Auditor details how Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools accumulated more than $11 million in state fund overdrafts during FY 2025—and why the problem went undetected for months. 🔍 Key findings include: • A $16.9 million budget transfer that exceeded available funds, triggering an immediate overdraft • Missing monthly budget reconciliations, limiting oversight and delaying corrective action • Approximately $15 million in expenses kept “off the books” until after the fiscal year ended, masking the district’s true financial position • A zero interest loan from the Child Nutrition Fund approved without clear repayment terms, raising compliance concerns The report concludes that weak internal controls, delayed accounting practices, and retroactive approvals allowed financial problems to grow instead of being addressed early—putting public funds and trust at risk. 📄 Read the full Rapid Response Report to understand what happened, why it matters, and what changes are being recommended (link below).

Tuesday marked the inaugural meeting of the Modernization of Election Data Systems (MEDS) Commission, a new advisory body created by State Auditor Dave Boliek to help with ongoing efforts to modernize North Carolina’s election management and campaign finance reporting systems. As technology evolves, so must the systems that support secure and accurate elections. MEDS brings together a bipartisan group of election officials, policy experts, and academics to provide real world insight and practical expertise. Just as important as the work itself is how it’s done: the meeting was open to the public and livestreamed on OSA’s Facebook page, reinforcing a commitment to transparency and accountability at every stage of the process. This collaborative, open approach helps ensure that North Carolina’s voting infrastructure is secure, user friendly, and worthy of public trust. View the live stream replay on our Facebook page.
