I read @NCTM’s “How Big Is an Acre?”article while my cookies baked today. They mentioned how it is important to make math locally relevant to kids (which @cbebby and @JanineRemillard would also remind me when we used to have PD discussions). NCTM made their math article relevant to me as a teacher by using two examples from the Connected Mathematics curriculum that we used at Penn Alexander. They discussed an example that showed speeds using a table and/or graph, and they mentioned an Olympic speed walker. We took the middle schoolers to the Penn Relays one year. The article made me think it would have been neat if the math discussion on graphing speeds was at the same time of year as the races at Penn. The article also discusses ways to use locally relevant math with kindergartners. I thought Janine and Caroline were just being kind to let a kindergarten teacher (me) attend their PDs. I guess NCTM knows people who enjoy reading about kindergarten and middle school math in the same article too. ❤️ #buylocal #smallbatch #MathEd #earlychildhood
