On May 12, NDU’s Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy (ES) in collaboration with the National Defense University Foundation will host “Connection to Industry Day,” where industry leaders will partner with the next generation of national security leaders to apply strategic thinking to one of our most urgent vulnerabilities: erosion of U.S. industrial capacity. President of the National Defense University, Vice Admiral Peter Garvin, will join ES Commandant Brig Gen Kirsten Aguilar and representatives from leading companies for a day of direct engagement with ES students focused on solutions that will revitalize the national industrial base. VADM Garvin is a 2005 graduate of the National War College and a career naval aviator with over three decades of service, from Patrol Squadron to Naval War College President. During his career, he has prioritized building partnerships with industry. VADM Garvin will give remarks to help kick off the day, which furthers NDU’s mission: educating not for the sake of education, but to guarantee national security; or put more directly, in order to fight and win. Last year, they visited Tesla in Austin, TSMC in Taiwan, and the world's largest underground copper mine in Chile, all as part of a single academic year spanning 20 nations and 500+ site visits across 19 critical industries. From autonomous systems to microelectronics to strategic materials, these are the supply chains, technologies, and industrial realities that directly shape U.S. national security decisions. Law Day was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the same president whose name the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy proudly carries, and whose granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, has remained deeply connected to the NDU community. That connection runs deeper than a name. Eisenhower understood that the rule of law was not separate from national security. It was foundational to it. The strength of American democracy, its institutions, its alliances, and its ability to lead on the world stage, rests on that foundation. At NDU, we develop leaders who understand that distinction. Strategy without legal and institutional grounding is not strategy. It is risk. As James Schmeling, President and CEO of the NDU Foundation, reflects: "Law Day is a personal reminder for me.
