Nebraska ranchers are rebuilding after nearly 900,000 acres burned this spring. Producers who’ve lived through wildfire recovery share what helped, what’s ahead, and why community matters. 🎥 Watch the Rural Radio Forum + read the story: ruralradio.com/rrn/news/nebra…

Cedar trees are rapidly spreading across Nebraska’s grasslands, threatening valuable forage for grazing animals and habitat for wildlife. In some areas, grass production has dropped by as much as 75% over the past three decades due to cedar tree encroachment. The best time to control your cedar trees is now! To help landowners and producers tackle this issue, hands-on workshops will be held at two locations on Thursday, June 4, 2026: 10 am to noon MT at the Fairbuilding in Mullen (Hooker County Fairgrounds) or 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. MT at the Winter Building in Hyannis (South Main & Morton Streets). Gain insight from real-life examples of various cedar control projects, including before/after photos, cost of the projects, cost-share options, and how producers are maintaining cedar-free pastures to maximize grass. Understanding how cedar trees spread and grow will help producers decide the best control options to use. Learn how pastures recover after fire, and how wildlife numbers, like grassland birds, change based on cedar canopy. Walk-ins are welcome, but registrations are appreciated. To register at either location, call the Central Sandhills Area Extension Office at 308-645-2267, email Bethany at bjohnston3@unl.edu, or visit go.unl.edu/cedar_signup to register. No cost to attend. Thanks to these partners: Nebraska Extension, Pheasants Forever, the Nature Conservancy, Sandhills Task Force, Nebraska Game & Parks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and NRCS.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the National Grazing Lands Coalition is sharing stories that hit close to home. Their first video highlights the hidden struggles farmers face as they share about the stress, pressure, and emotional weight that often stays behind the scenes in agriculture. If you or someone you know needs support, Nebraska producers can reach out to the Rural Response Hotline (1‑800‑464‑0258) or AgriSafe’s resources for farmers and ranchers. Conservation photographer Mike Forsberg and Andy Caven of the International Crane Foundation are pedaling the 2,500‑mile whooping crane migration route this summer. They’ll roll through Nebraska’s grasslands in early June, spotlighting how vital our prairies are to these endangered travelers. We’re cheering them on as they share the story of this remarkable journey. Follow them on their journey here 👉🏻whoopingcranechronicles.com/bike/ starting on May 11th!

Last night, NGLC—together with the Sandhills Task Force —was proud to facilitate a rancher‑to‑rancher conversation for producers affected by the recent wildfires. The discussion centered on what decisions come next, and on helping folks understand the resources available as they begin navigating recovery.

🌾 Succession planning isn’t just paperwork—it’s protecting your family’s legacy. Join NGLC this spring for a webinar on why premarital agreements and intentional financial planning matter in agriculture. Hear from Jane F. Langan Mach (Rembolt Ludtke LLP) on the legal side of premarital agreements, and Miles Garwood (Waddell & Reed) on planning for the next generation. nebraskagrazinglands.org/Events/webinar…
